Two charged with importing cannabis worth $6.2m

Two people have been accused of importing more than $6 million worth of cannabis into Bermuda almost five years ago.

David Mathias, 67, and Danielle Mathias, 36, were charged with importing the controlled drug and THC or shatter when they appeared in Magistrates’ Court today.

Carrington Mahoney, for the Crown, said that the substances, which were allegedly imported on May 10, 2020, had an estimated $6.2 million street value.

Mr Mathias, from Warwick, and Ms Mathias, from Devonshire, were not required to enter pleas as the case must be heard in the Supreme Court.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson adjourned the case to the May arraignment session and released the pair on $50,000 bail with a surety until that time.

She also ordered them to surrender all travel documents and report to Hamilton Police Station twice a week.
