DUI court for driver after confrontation with police
A man who assaulted and threatened police officers while intoxicated has been referred to a drink-drivers’ court treatment programme.
Derek Weeks, 38, threatening one officer, assaulting another, damaging a pair of glasses and driving while impaired by alcohol when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The court heard that police stopped Weeks, from Pembroke, after he disobeyed a traffic sign along Cedar Avenue last January.
Weeks was taken to the Hamilton Police Station after he accidentally knocked an officer’s vehicle over while walking.
He threatened one officer at the station and swung a punch at another, causing their prescription glasses to break.
Magistrate Maria Sofianos ordered that Weeks be sentenced for the offences in DUI Court, which he has been participating in for more than a year, and disqualified him from driving all vehicles until further notice.
