Police detail search for evidence after fatal 2022 shooting

A police officer told the Supreme Court he saw two men attempt to climb out of a window as police launched a search after a fatal shooting.

QuaZori Brangman, Jukai Burgess, Aaron Perinchief and Nasaje Anderson have denied murdering 19-year-old Letrae Doeman and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence.

Last week, the jury heard that Mr Doeman was the pillion passenger on a motorcycle travelling west when he was fired upon near Flatts Village in the early hours of July 1, 2022.

The victim attempted to flee through a parking lot and was chased and shot ten times before the gunman got on to the back of a motorcycle and rode away from the scene.

Mr Doeman was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2am.

Prosecutors have alleged that all four defendants played a role in the murder and subsequent efforts to escape justice.

As the trial continued yesterday, Inspector Roger Saints told the court that, hours after the shooting, he was dispatched to a property on Rock Oven Lane, St George’s, as part of the investigation into the murder.

He told the court that he parked on St David’s Road and went through a gate in a fence to access a grassy area behind the targeted property.

“I had an unobstructed view of the house,” he said. “I saw one of the windows open and a male threw a heat-sealed bag out.

“Two men then came to the same window. It appeared to me that they may have been coming out of the window so I shouted at them, identified myself and instructed them to go back inside the house.”

He told the court that the men complied with his instructions.

Asked what made him believe the men may have been trying to come through the window, Mr Saints said: “They opened the window and half their body came out.

“They seemed to be looking around frantically.”

Mr Saints said he then took part in a search of a wooded area for another person before returning to the house to assist with the search inside the residence.

He told the court he went to a back bedroom in the house, which he noticed was the other side of the window he had seen the two men attempt to exit from earlier.

Mr Saints said he also noticed a CCTV monitor in the bedroom with several views of the outside of the property.

He told the court he found and seized documents and a driver’s licence linked to Mr Burgess in the bedroom, while in a nearby side room he discovered a black armoured vest on a chair.

Under cross-examination, he said that the vest was labelled as being XXL. He could not say who it belonged to.

Mr Saints said that at 12.45pm that day, he left the house to search an overgrown wooded area to the front of the property, where he found a black trash bag with a red drawstring.

Inside the trash bag, he saw two plastic shopping bags, which contained items including clothing and footwear.

“Once I saw what the contents were, I left it in situ, where it was,” Mr Saints said. “I then called for the forensic support officer to come and process the scene.”

The trial continues.
