Players’ viewpoint
With Bermuda cricket yesterday sent into the wilderness, The Royal Gazette asked two former members of the national team and one member of the current squad to give their assessment of the current team’s struggles:Dean Minors, wicketkeeper, St. George’s, Bermuda 2007 World Cup member:“To be honest I am extremely distraught at the moment.“Words cannot express how difficult it is for me to accept that we once were at the top of the world and now our national team are in Division III.“It just goes to show that the world has moved on and we haven’t.“Many of the senior players step aside to be noble and to give the youngsters the opportunity, but while doing this we have failed to challenge them for a position and guide them even more.“It hurts but what hurts even more is where do we go from here? Everyone has great ideas!“But we have to find a way to humble ourselves and come together and sort this thing out independently from the Board.“It’s heart breaking.”* * * *Kevin Hurdle, Flatts Victoria, Bermuda 2007 World Cup member:“I feel they lacked the experience going into the competition, there’s nothing wrong with bringing them through but the last time we qualified we only had two or three youngsters in the team, those being OJ Pitcher and Delyone Borden and they were guided by the more experienced players.“Everyone else was experienced in the game and it worked in our favour.“In a position where your back is against the wall, I feel you should take the best team possible.“This is detrimental to the sport here for the simple fact that there won’t be much international cricket for the players now and what will the younger guys be pushing for if there is no international cricket?“Everyone wants to get to the next level but if the next level isn’t taking place then what is it that they really have to aspire to.”* * * *Stephen Outerbridge, Bailey’s Bay, Bermuda 2007 World Cup member and current national team player who was unable to travel to Dubai:“I was thinking of this earlier and there is no question that things need to be changed.“When you look at it, you won’t be able to play in the World Cup, and the next one is in 2019 that we can get to and that is a long time away.“We can put the emphasis of the squad on the guys that are in their early 20s and get them to where they need to be.“Another way to look at it is that you can put more emphasis on Twenty20 as it is an easier passage at the moment, although that is a task in itself and also no four-day cricket, a format I quite enjoy.“You also lose funding and this is the main thing, I just hope that the planning gets better.“They said there is a contingency plan in place and I hope this is true because now we will see who is committed to the development of the game and those who are in it for money.“As the Premier said, we are resetting the dial so I hope that we reset and come back in a more positive light.“You can’t look at it any other way. It is what it is.”
