Stovell can’t stop rampant Warriors
St. David’s, 185 for four, beat Southampton Rangers, 183 all out, by six wickets. An all-round performance by Dion Stovell wasn’t enough to help Southampton Rangers beat St David’s as the defending champions crashed to defeat for the second successive week to the same opponents, this time by six wickets at Lords.Having lost last week at home in embarrassing fashion, the champions went into yesterday’s game looking for a reversal of fortunes, but were met by their rivals who were in buoyant mood and looking to put distance between themselves and the chasing pack. The win was down, in large part, to a 116-run fifth wicket partnership between Lionel Cann (55) and Landro Minors (40) with the pair joining forces with the score on 69 for four.Stovell, for all his worth, couldn’t get his side over the hump even with his dismissals of Ajuan Lambe with the score on 41 and fellow international Fiqre Crockwell shortly after with the hosts on 50.Traddie Simpson chipped in for the two remaining wickets that fell.Minors and Cann partnered up after OJ Pitcher fell on 69, with the pair playing risk free cricket with their side in complete control.“It was a good game for us, we carried the momentum over from last week and I think that the result last week put pressure on them,” said Cann.“Our bowlers bowled well and we put the pressure on them knowing that we had the ability to repeat what we did last week.“As a senior player in both our side and the national team it is important for myself to help show the younger guys what it takes to be successful in the game.“The game was in the balance when I got there and the main thing was to get one big partnership and that would steady us and with myself and Landro out there I told him to play risk free cricket and we would be ok.”The decision to bat first never really helped the visitors who saw wickets fall at regular intervals throughout their innings.Stovell blasted a good innings of 61, while Shannon Rayner contributed with 21 for his innings, yet it was not enough to post a defendable total.Janeiro Tucker (16) and Gerald Simons (19) were the only other batsmen to get to double digits.Cousins Justin and OJ Pitcher took three wickets apiece, while Sammy Robinson grabbed two to help their side to a comfortable win.“Going into the game we knew that Dion and Janeiro would score runs because they are their two danger man but we bowled the right bowlers at the right end and took the chances when they came,” said Cann.“Any side would back –themselves chasing 180 or so and they did bowl well and get a few wickets early on but gave the talent to get the job done and with a new coach and a new outlook on the game we can only go from strength to strength.“We won the league in 2009 and since the national side aren’t playing we have a full strength team to choose form and it shows in games like to today.“I expect us to compete for the league title and we have a head start on Rangers but there are a lot of games to be played so we aren’t too excited at the moment.”
