Cavs crush Forties and blow title race wide open
Spring Garden Cavaliers have blown the Commercial Cricket League title race wide open after ending Forties’ unbeaten run with a crushing six-wicket victory.Jamaican Association stayed on the joint leaders’ heels with a seven-wicket victory over North Village, thanks to an unbeaten century from former Cleveland County batsman Aaron Adams and a six-wicket haul by veteran bowler Michael Campbell. With three matches left, Cavaliers and Forties are tied on 40 points with Jamaican Association ten points further back.Cavaliers’ victory at Garrison Field avenged defeat to Forties in their first league meeting in May the only reverse Cavaliers have suffered in four encounters against their rivals this season. Cavaliers beat Forties in the season-opening Memorial Trophy match and also beat them in their Twenty20 League Cup preliminary round tie.Cavaliers made light work of overhauling Forties’ below-par 202 for nine, coasting home with more than five overs to spare as ever-reliable Craig Smith and Ricardo Waldron produced a match-winning, unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 111 after the game was reduced to 40 overs a side because of a late start.Having lost the toss, Forties suffered a major setback when prolific opener Simon Jones failed for the first time this season as he was run out for nine.Three wickets tumbled with the total 37 but Yatin Gawas, at number five, and Ernest McCallan (37) repaired the early damage with a fourth-wicket stand of 82 although the lower order failed to press on as James Pace picked up three for eight from two overs, Anthony Brathwaite two for for 20 from seven and Waldron two for 47 from nine.Gawas was unlucky to miss out on a century, striking nine fours and four sixes in his 91-ball 89.In reply, opener Ricky Hill made 24 and Barry Richards a 22-ball 31, including six boundaries, after Cavaliers were in similar trouble to their opponents at 48 for three.Although Richards fell at 92 Smith and Waldron shut the door on Forties as they cashed in on some friendly bowling to seal victory.Smith blasted seven fours and four sixes in his 57-ball unbeaten 75 while Waldron’s 55-ball unbeaten 40 contained four fours.Dhammika Weerapulli took two for 58 and 124.4 overs and Brain Holdipp two for 63 from ten.“It was a good win, we needed to win,” said Richards.“We were lucky to win the toss that was half the battle. We figured we could chase down their score. But they kept chipping away with wickets until Craig and Ricardo settled it.”Said Forties’ spokesman Gordon Campbell: “Par for this field on this day was about 240. We didn’t get enough runs, getting bogged down several times.“Yatin produced a fine innings he deserved a century.“We bowled too many long hops to batsmen who feast on them.“We couldn’t keep the wickets falling. We knew that was the only way we could win.“Craig and Ricardo were full value for their 111-run partnership.“We have to win the rest of our games now,” added Campbell. At Shelly Bay, player-coach Adams, batting at number four, stroked ten fours and three sixes in a disciplined knock of 102 not out as he and Presley Millwood (27 not out) added an unbroken 132 for the fourth wicket to rescue their side from a shaky 41 for three as Jamaican Association, completing the double, cruised past Village’s 172 in the 37th over, despite acting skipper Rudy Smith’s two for 49 from 12 overs.Earlier, openers Dion Ball, Jr, who struck six fours and a six in his 51, and Mike Payne (22) gave Village a solid start and Mike Levon, Jr chipped in with 23 at number nine but Campbell held the upper hand, producing a superb effort with the ball to claim six for 40 from 12.1 overs. Bevin Carr weighed in with two for 38 from six.“Our players played brilliantly, it was a superb team effort,” said spokesman Glenmore Barrett as he set his sights on this weekend’s key clash against Cavaliers at Shelly Bay.Cavaliers won the first meeting between the clubs in May but Barrett remains optimistic about his side’s title chances.“We’re going to pull out all the stops on Sunday, it’s never say never,” said Barrett.“We’re still in the title race if we take Cavaliers but Forties are our jinx team.”Forties travel to Garrison Field again to take on bottom club BC Allrounders in the weekend’s other fixture.nFormer Forties batsman Gerald Simons and his wife Dorothea were pictured on the front page of yesterday’s Nation newspaper in Barbados, with Simons holding a full set of match tickets ahead of the second Test between West Indies and India at Kensington Oval. The couple have been regular visitors to the ground for many years.
