Cavs and Forties neck and neck in race to finish

Rolling back the years: Ricky Hill in his Cup Match days.

Ricky Hill rolled back the years with a sparkling unbeaten 84 and Simon Jones reeled off another half century as Spring Garden Cavaliers and Forties remained tied at the top of the Commercial Cricket League table.Opener Hill, the 52-year-old former Cup Match star, helped Cavaliers complete the double over Jamaican Association in their showdown at Shelly Bay while Jones’ unbeaten 64 underpinned makeshift Forties’ seven-wicket win over nine-man BC Allrounders, who are still without a point, at Garrison Field.Cavaliers and Forties both have 50 points with two matches remaining.A 250-plus total looked on the cards for third-placed Jamaican Association, who lost the toss, as openers Wayne Locke and Presley Millwood provided the perfect platform with a superb stand of 147 before they were parted in the 31st over, Locke striking five fours in his 81 and Millwood seven fours in his 65.Although Keniek Wallen weighed in with 40 the Jamaicans had to settle for 228 for four from their 42 overs, James Pace taking two for 91 from 11 overs. In reply, Cavaliers lost skipper Dave Greenidge with only 13 runs on the board and although Ricardo Waldron made 49 the side suffered a setback when big-hitting Craig Smith fell first ball at 169 for five. But Hill, who stroked six boundaries, stood firm as Pace made 29 and Anthony Brathwaite an unbeaten 29 to guide Cavaliers, the defending champions, to victory with three overs to spare.Neil Anglin was the Jamaicans’ most successful bowler with three for 76 from ten overs.“We were missing four of our top bowlers,” said Cavaliers batsman Barry Richards.“But we had a good batting line-up so we felt anything under 250 we’d be comfortable getting.“Ricky’s knock was fantastic it was a pleasure to watch.“It was important he batted through the innings as we lost an early wicket and Craig, going for a big hit, was out first ball.”Said Jamaican Association manager Glenmore Barrett: “Though we lost I was proud of the guys for their effort.“The opening stand by Presley and Wayne was an amazing performance. They did a lot of hard running but got tired towards the end of their innings so runs dried up a bit.”BC Allrounders, who chose to bat after winning the toss against Forties, appeared well set after reaching 100 for two but Yatin Gawas and Dhammika Weerappuli snapped up three wickets apiece to peg back their opponents, who subsided to 143 all out in the 36th over.BA Allrounders’ chief run-getters were Dano Outerbridge (27), Dion Wainwright (26), Carlton Smith (26) and Brian Trott (24).Weerappuli’s three for 29 came from 7.4 overs while Gawas took three for 38 from 12.Opener Jones led the reply with 10 fours in his 60-ball knock a remarkable sixth time in eight innings he has passed 50 this season Kavi Selvarajah made 29 from 16 balls and Brian Holdipp, who had to leave early, retired on 21 as Forties, whose side included seven Sri Lankans, raced to 144 for three in the 21st over. Shejuan Swan took two for 62 from 10.2 overs.“Their top order batted very well and sensibly and they looked headed for a score of around 200,” said Forties’ spokesman Gordon Campbell.“Our bowlers were pretty tight. Brian (one for 48 from 12) toiled long and hard without much luck.“Yatin gutted the middle order and Dhammika cleared up the tail, taking the last three wickets in eight balls.”Forties had to scramble to raise a side, hit by “travel, injuries and golf tournaments”, according to Campbell.“We had only seven players the day before the match but trolled the streets and ended up with a full side and yours truly as 12th man,” he said, adding: “Except for an Indian, Brit, Canadian and Bermudian, this was Sri Lanka ‘B’.”n The Associates (21 points) are six points clear of Fine Leg Byes at the top of the Evening League’s Premier Division after winning all seven matches in the first half of the season. Airport High Flyaz, Deloitte and PHC were tied for the Second Division lead on 15 points as of July 1, organisers said.
