Counties incentive for Cleveland players

Cleveland’s cricketers won’t just be playing in a Cup Match trial on Saturday, they’ll also be fighting for their right to play in Eastern Counties the following weekend. The First Division side take on a St George’s XI in the second trial match at Wellington Oval, with coach Allan Douglas hoping it will ‘sort out one or two guys for me’ ahead of their opening round match against Bailey’s Bay on July 16.“It should be a great game of cricket,” said Douglas. “It’s a big thing for us, because now it gives me an opportunity, the week before County, to play guys that are right on the doorstep, or should be playing next week, and things like that, against good opposition.“On Saturday our guys will have an opportunity to play against guys of a really good calibre. We’re training three days a week, this week, in preparation for it, it should be exciting, I’m looking forward to it.”Cleveland players such as Damali Bell and Allan Douglas jr, meanwhile, will be using the occasion to try and impress both sets of selectors.“We’ve got a couple of guys who are in our team who have a good chance (of making Cup Match),” said Douglas. “Players like (Damali) Bell, my son Allan (Douglas jr), those guys have an opportunity to say ‘ok, now here’s my home team, I’m getting ready for County Cup next week, but Cup Match (selectors) are looking at us as well’. If they put their heads down and do what they do best, it just puts pressure on everybody else and gives the selectors a tough job, and that’s what they want.”Douglas has been busy preparing his players for a tough couple of weeks which culminates with them opening their Eastern Counties defence against Bailey’s Bay at Sea Breeze Oval. The First Division side came through two tough matches last year against Bay and Flatts, battling to a draw in the latter, and holding off an Irving Romaine inspired charge to deny Bay.“At the end of the day it doesn’t matter (who you play), when it comes to County Cup they’re all tough matches,” said Douglas. “You go in there, and it’s (what happens) that day. Last year, if you think about it, the game could have gone either way against Flatts, and against Bailey’s Bay the game could have gone either way.“Everybody’s in for a great treat. When teams like Flatts and Cleveland have the trophy, more people are coming out, more people are expecting a result, and that’s all healthy for the sport.”Up first though is a St George’s side that includes the likes of Lionel Cann, OJ Pitcher, George O’Brien, Bay bowler Lateef Trott, and will be led by St George’s skipper Oronde Bascome. The match will be a stern test for Cleveland, who are playing in the First Division this season and don’t normally come up against players of that calibre.“It’s a wonderful opportunity that St George’s have afforded us to be honest, to be able to play this match,” said Douglas. “We have a pretty strong team, and I’m really thankful for St George’s giving us this great opportunity.“When we’re training, we’re trying to say ‘well here’s how we’re going to execute this, or here’s the field setting for that’. When it comes to batting, it’s about having an understanding that while we have to make runs, we want to eliminate risk.“It’s an uphill struggle with one or two guys, but they’re just not mature enough yet and haven’t played enough cricket. But once they play on Saturday, that should sort out one of two guys for me.”St George’s XI: Oronde Bascome, Jason Anderson, –Dennico Hollis, Fiqre Crockwell, OJ Pitcher, Lionel Cann, Christian Burgess, Ryan Steede, Lateef Trott, Kyle –Hodsoll, George O'Brien. Reserves: Shae Pitcher, Ricky Foggo.
