Bermuda, 160 for four, beat Suriname, 41 for three, by eight runs, D/L method.Bermuda head coach David Moore praised his side’s ‘outstanding’ performance in slightly controversial circumstances as Bermuda narrowly won a rain-affected match against Suriname on the second day of the ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 Tournament in Florida.Moore’s side scored a 160 for four on the back of a blistering 63 from Lionel Cann and a brisk 50 from skipper David Hemp, but were then forced to watch as rain threatened to spoil an impressive batting performance. The rain finally ended as the game’s cut-off time approached, leaving Bermuda to rush around removing the covers, while –Suriname objected to the game continuing.“We didn’t want to have to come back out again another day to play, which is what would have happened,” said Moore.“We would have had to come back and play on the rest day, which isn’t what I was interested in doing, none of us were. We just wanted to make sure that we got on, and got the game out of the way.”Umpires Karran Bayney and Sylvan Taylor eventually set Suriname 50 to win from just five overs, a target they came –agonisingly close to reaching after Arun Goekel (18*) and Kemraj Hardat (12*) took 17 off the penultimate over from Rodney Trott. They hadn’t looked like coming close at all as George O’Brien claimed two wickets in two balls and Kamau Leverock bagged another in the opening three overs. However, they got after Trott and were left needing 15 to win from Damali Bell’s last over. The Suriname pair could only manage to get six runs though, and eventually fell just eight short.“It was a tough situation,” said Moore. “We didn’t think we were going to play. At one time we thought it (the game) was off. So, it was very difficult to remain focused, then to do it, and get it on, and win the game was outstanding. It was really good.”For only the second time since Moore took charge 18 months ago, Bermuda played a complete game, performing with both bat and ball in a match the Bermuda head coach said his team deserved to win.“We played a complete game, which is exactly what we wanted to do,” said Moore. “We’re moving forward which is where we want to be. We learned from our mistakes (against Argentina), and we really cashed in on where we wanted to be, which was key.“The bottom line is that we deserved to win the game. They had 10 wickets to get 50 runs, they got 40. We backed ourselves, our pacers bowled really well, and unfortunately they got hold of Rodney. It was closer than we wanted it to be.”Cann and Hemp got Bermuda off to a flying start, putting on 93 for the first wicket. For the second match in succession Cann scored a half century, with yesterday’s runs coming off just 35 balls and including five fours and two sixes. When he was out, bowled by Sauid Drepaul, Bermuda were going on at almost 10 an over.“Obviously it was a fantastic innings by Cann and Hemp up front, a very good partnership there, in trying conditions,” said Moore.“The heat was energy sapping. That was excellent there and to get 160 we were going at more than a run a ball, we were very confident, played very well and it was excellent cricket.”When Cann departed, Hemp and Crockwell put on 44 for the second wicket and at 160 for four Bermuda more than fancied their chances of winning the game. Then the rain came, and made it far closer than it might otherwise have been.O’Brien though removed opener Troy Dudnath with his second ball, sent Mohindra Boodram back for a golden duck immediately after, and although Trott’s expensive over gave Bermuda a few nervy moments the win means they go in to –today’s game against Canada unbeaten.
