Leverock destroys St. George’s

Southampton Rangers 105 (21.5 overs); St. George’s 35 (20.2 overs)Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock has established many feats in cricket over the years but few could match his brilliant performance at Wellington Oval yesterday when he claimed four wickets for no runs in 1.2 overs, including a hat-trick.Fortunately he marked his first game of the season on a day when batsmen failed to show any sort of form, with the fixture having a total of 12 ducks, six on each team. One key wicket snared by the big spinner was that of Clay Smith, still one of the Island’s quality batsmen.Smith was brilliantly snapped up at mid-on by Dion Stovell for 19. The dismissal virtually killing the home sides faint homes of staging a miraculous recovery after they were floundering at 11 for six wickets. The end finally came in 20.2 overs after one hours and 19 minutes. The early bowlers torturing the batsmen were Dion stovell with four wickets for 16 runs off nine overs with six maidens while Tradie Simpson snatched two for 17 in nine overs with four maidens to seal victory for Rangers.Nobody expected Rangers’ total to be competitive let alone good enough for a victory but when it was over they had pulled off a stunning victory their second of the season with four losses.Janeiro Tucker (41) and veteran Curtis Jackson (26) pulled them from disaster with a second wicket stand of 82, taking the total from 16 for three to 98 before Jackson left. Tucker departed two runs later, lbw to Detroy Smith, after hitting five fours and a six but the end soon came with nobody else left capable of facing the bowling with any comfort.Detroy Smith led the St. George’s bowling with four for 24 off 7.5 overs while Rudell Pitcher had two for 24 off six overs and a maiden and Zico Burgess claimed two for 35 off five overs and a maiden.
