Veterans seek success at Sobers event

Spoils of victory: Late Bermuda Masters manager Warrington (Soup) Zuill shows off the Antigua and Barbuda Independence Cricket Festival trophy.

Bermuda Masters will be represented for the first time at next month’s Sir Garfield Sobers Masters Tournament in Barbados. The occasion will mark the team’s first appearance in a Caribbean tournament since their triumph at the 2006 Antigua and Barbuda Independence Cricket Festival in the homeland of West Indies’ great Sir Vivian Richards.Once again Bermuda Masters’ line-up is heavily stacked with former stars who team stalwart Hoyt Zuill reckons are capable of success in Barbados.“We are taking a full-strength team, all of the guys are looking forward to the tournament and we are going there to win,” he declared.Having captured glory in Antigua five years’ ago, Zuill is keeping his fingers crossed that history can repeat itself in the Caribbean.“We are hoping that lightning strikes twice and most of the guys have been playing league cricket all season,” he added.Bermuda Masters will be led by former Somerset and West Stars batsman Andre (Doc) Manders. The squad also boasts former national team players Ricky Hill, Allen Richardson, Clevie Wade, Herbie Bascome and Charlie Marshall. The local team were forced to decide between touring South America or competing in the Sir Garfield Sobers Masters Tournament this year.“We had a choice between going to Argentina and this tournament but we decided to play in the Sir Garfield Sobers tournament because of the prestigious name behind it,” Zuill said. “Argentina was just a tour whereas this is a tournament.”Bermuda’s seasoned campaigners depart for Barbados on November 5 and are due back on November 19.Manders’ team will play their opening match against England’s Shropshire on November 7 before facing Yorkshire on November 9 and Suffolk on November 11 and a local team in their final round-robin match on November 14.All matches are limited overs and are to be played at various grounds across Barbados.
