Discontentment is brewing among the ranks over David Hemp’s captaincy, The Royal Gazette can reveal. It is understood that several players have openly expressed a strong desire to have the former English County player replaced as senior national cricket captain by someone they can relate to on a more personal level. As it stands, Hemp is based in the UK and is only called upon for international duty while his fellow team-mates either play alongside or against each other in the domestic leagues. There have been occasions when national squad cricketers have trained for international competition in the absence of their captain, something that has also ruffled feathers among the squad.BCB president Lloyd Fray acknowledged that concerns over Hemp’s captaincy have been brought to his attention.“There has been some concerns from players which has come to the Board via our Selection/Outreach Committee through their discussions with various players,” he said. “The Board will meet soon to review the report in full and will respond accordingly.”Hemp succeeded Irving Romaine as Bermuda captain in August 2009.The ex-Glamorgan player’s appointment to the top post arrived four months after starring with the bat during 2011 World Cup qualifiers in South Africa where he amassed the most runs (557), topped the tournament batting averages (185.67) and hit the highest individual score, an unbeaten 170 against Uganda.Incidentally, Hemp’s first assignment as Bermuda’s captain was against the Ugandans at the National Sports Centre in the ICC Intercontinental Shield.Meanwhile, the issue of whether or not Hemp should remain as captain has been met with mixed reaction within the local cricket fraternity. With the national squad currently in a rebuilding phase, Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame cricketer Dennis Wainwright believes the time is ripe to replace Hemp with a home-grown leader.“I think having David as captain has served its purpose and we should be able to find a captain among all the clubs here,” he said. “What we need to do now is start concentrating on our local players because I don’t think it’s necessary to continue with the captain we have.“He doesn’t play league cricket (in Bermuda) so consequently he can’t develop a rapport with our local cricketers which is so necessary now. And if this is a concern now then it’s going to be an even bigger concern later, so we need to deal with the situation now.”Wainwright finds it insulting to have to bring someone in from abroad to lead Bermuda’s national cricket squad.“I would be insulted that I have been playing cricket all these years and considered to be one of the top players in the country and you have to bring in somebody to lead me,” he said. “It would be an insult to me so I don’t think we need David Hemp who hasn’t played one season in local cricket.”Former Somerset Cup Match skipper Andre Manders sees things differently. As one of the most experienced players in the team, Manders believes that Hemp is still the most suitable man for the job.“Hemp has a lot of experience and I don’t know what the big deal is because I didn’t see any disconnect during the last games here (MCC Tour),” he said.Manders also doesn’t have any qualms with the captain of Bermuda’s national squad being based overseas.“I don’t see any problems with him being over there,” he said. “It’s just the same with us having players like Kamau Leverock and Steffan Kelly overseas, that’s my opinion.”
