St David’s return to Eastern Counties

St David’s have seemingly quashed their grudge with the Eastern Counties Cricket Association (ECCA) after returning to the annual summer spectacle after a two year absence. The Islanders’ long standing wrangle with the ECCA stemmed from the association’s decision to hand Bailey’s Bay the 2010 year’s series for the second successive year, despite St. David’s being scheduled to host the spectacle.St David’s president Aaron Lugo, who wasn’t present at Tuesday’s meeting between the clubs involved in the competition, believes supporters will be thrilled by the Islanders’ return to the competition.“I couldn’t make it but the executives went (to the meeting), it is good to see that we are back in the Eastern Counties; we have been out for two years. It is always exciting to play,” said Lugo.“We know the fans want the game, and for us to be back in it is pleasing to everyone really.“At some point the business of the game has to be sorted out, hopefully this is the beginning of the Counties really coming back together for the betterment of all, not just one individual or club.”Bay vice-president Tareek Somner also voiced his pleasure at seeing the Islanders resume their heated rivalry with Bailey’s Bay.“I’m glad St David’s has finally decided to rejoin the County series,” said Somner. “In my view the Eastern Counties is bigger than Cup Match, especially for the East Enders.“It’s the spirit of the fans that make this such a great event so it’ll be good to have the St. David’s fans back as well.“I am extremely confident that Bailey’s Bay will be successful in defending the Eastern County’s Cup.”The champions will open defence of their Eastern Counties crown against Flatts Victoria on July 21 at Sea Breeze Oval, with the winner scheduled to play St David’s.Cleveland will compete in the final round of the Counties with the dates for the second and third rounds yet to be announced.Bay, who also possess the Junior Eastern County Cup, will face off against St. David’s in the first round of their competition at Lords, with Flatts Victoria taking on the winners in the second round followed by Cleveland County in the third and final round.
