Gilbert aiming to make most of UK opportunity

Joshua Gilbert intends to make the most of his stay at the Norfolk Cricket Academy in the UK later this year

Joshua Gilbert can hardly wait to broaden his cricket horizons in the UK.Gilbert, 18, has been granted a scholarship to attend the prestigious Norfolk Cricket Academy in England this summer, where he intends to take his game to the next level.Last week Bermuda Cricket Board received a grant of $6,372 from Government’s National Youth Sponsorship Programme to send the Somerset and Bermuda all-rounder to the UK.“I hope to raise all three aspects of my game and try and get my bowling on point and enhance my batting and bowling,” Gilbert said. “I’ve never had one-on-one coaching with a spin coach (Chris Brown) and it’s really nice to finally get some personal training.“Now I can work on my mechanics for bowling, technique and all that sort of stuff. I want to try and get my batting up there with my bowling because I feel I can be a good one-day all-rounder for Bermuda.“My game is okay but there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done and I’m really looking forward to the experience.”Earlier this year Gilbert represented Bermuda at ICC World Twenty20 2012 qualifiers in Dubai which proved to be an “eye-opener” for the Bermuda College student.“I got to see how top teams like Afghanistan and Ireland play and approach the game,” he said. “You could see the hunger they have for the game and I want to get myself to that sort of level.“That was the hardest competition I have played against. It was tough and a real eye-opener.”Bermuda have not enjoyed the best of times on the international stage since appearing at the 2007 ICC World Cup. But with a better approach to the game Gilbert sees no reason why the Island cannot turn its fortunes around.“We have to change the way we approach the game if we want to be more successful in the future,” he said. “We are going to have to make a lot of changes if we want to be successful and I’m sure we will.“Even though we are not winning like we would like to you can see our performances are improving and I feel the gap is closing. We just have to sit down and think about it more.”If all goes accordingly Gilbert hopes to be travel to the UK as early as next month to begin enhancing his game.“I still have to talk to coach (national coach David Moore) and other members of the Board, but it could be as early as May,” he said. “I have already started looking on the internet to see what the deal is.“It seems to be a pretty prestigious academy because its patrons are the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, so I‘m guessing it’s a top club.”
