Cavaliers set for Forties showdown

Spring Garden Cavaliers, who completed an unprecedented clean sweep of the Commercial Cricket League’s four main trophies last year, will get the new season under way when they take on Forties in the Memorial Trophy match at Shelly Bay on Sunday. The annual curtainraiser normally pits the top league side against the knockout winners.Forties were chosen for Sunday’s match as they lost to Cavaliers in the knockout final and also finished second in the league.Missing from Cavaliers’ batting line-up will be hard-hitting left-hander Barry Richards, who has been appointed the league’s new president.Richards, voted in to replace Armell Thomas, who stepped down at the end of last season, has decided to call time on his Commercial League career, although he plans to continue playing in the Evening Cricket League. The league will again comprise five teams, ending weeks of uncertainty over this season’s line-up.Jamaican Association and North Village continue while Devonshire Stars, who competed as BC Allrounders for the past five years, have reverted to their former name.First round of league matches will be held on May 20 when Stars face Forties at Shelly Bay and Jamaican Association take on Village at Garrison Field.
