Gary Dowling has decided against seeking a third term as president of the Western Counties.

Gary Dowling will step down as president of the Western Counties at an upcoming special meeting. The former Willow Cuts cricketer has decided against seeking a third term in office, thus paving the way for a new leader.“I have never believed in serving forever and after eight years I think it’s time for someone else to take over the helm,” Dowling said. “I have enjoyed my time as president and even though I’m stepping down I still intend to support the Western Counties.”During his watch, Dowling helped to raise the Western Counties’ profile, assisted in bringing major sponsors onboard and also helped to clear the association’s debt.“When I went there we had a debt and now the association is looking good,” he said. “We cleared all debts.”Dowling also takes great pride in helping to bolster the Western Counties’ junior programme.“We were actually the ones that helped in the development of youth cricket in the West End and now the same baton has been taken up by the Bermuda Cricket Board,” he said. The former Cuts wicketkeeper also played an integral role in having past cricketers such as CV Jim Woolridge recognised for their contributions to the sport.“Mr Woolridge has made many contributions to the sport as a player and commentator and it was a pleasure to have acknowledged his continued service to the community through cricket,” Dowling added. The outgoing president thanked all those who served on his administration.“They were all very supportive and I wish them all the best in the future,” he said.Dowling’s eventual successor could be confirmed as early as next week.“Each club has been asked to submit candidates and we are hoping they do because we want all of our members to be a part of the process,” Dowling said.Earlier this year the Western Counties suffered a major setback after primary sponsors Ironshore Insurance withdrew their sponsorship of the association’s senior competition. However, they have agreed to continue providing support for the junior programme through the Sandys 360 initiative.Ironshore struck a partnership with the association in 2007, looking to support wherever they could and hoping to put the focus on the junior programme and youth development.n Logic Communications have agreed to sponsor Bermuda Cricket Board’s (BCB) senior domestic leagues for the upcoming season. In addition, the communications company will also provide free broadband internet service to the BCB and its affiliated clubs as well as present gift vouchers to the player of the week from the Premier and First Divisions.Logic will present trophies to the Premier and First Division players of the year at the end of the 2012 season.
