Cleveland County 129St David’s 134 for fourSt David’s all-rounder Sammy Robinson single-handedly destroyed visiting Cleveland at Lords yesterday as the reigning Premier 50-Over champions got their title defence off to a solid start.Robinson claimed mesmerising figures of five for eight off 7.1 overs that included three maidens with his offbreaks as Cleveland were dismissed in 42.1 overs. The third change bowler claimed his first victim after pushing back Dennis Musson’s off stump with a leg break and then had Courtney Trott held at point off the very next delivery to place himself on a hat-trick.Robinson was denied after tossing down a wide to Randy Bean. However, the national team player would not be denied a five-wicket haul as he had Bean and Levarr Talbot caught in the covers and Amon Paynter trapped leg before with a delivery that swung back sharply.“I have no complaints with my bowling,” Robinson said. “I bowled in good areas and my bowling was on the money.”Supporting Robinson was seamer Rudell Pitcher who claimed two for 21.Treadwell Gibbons led the Cleveland batting with a counter attacking half-century. The top order bat slammed three boundaries and a six off 87 deliveries on his Cleveland debut.Next high-man for the visitors was another debutant, Jason Anderson, who nudged a typically sedated 12 off 60 balls.Robinson also featured prominently in the Islanders’ run chase with an unbeaten 34 from 75 balls that included three boundaries. The national team player shared in an unbroken 24-run fifth-wicket stand with former Cleveland coach Clay Smith (12) that carried St David’s safely across the line.Skipper Fiqre Crockwell led by example with a breezy 35 from 24 deliveries that included four boundaries and a six at the top of the order while middle order bat Shae Pitcher added a useful 24.Talbot (two for 28) and Gibbons (two for 44) were the pick of the Cleveland bowling.* * * *By Stephen WrightBailey’s Bay, 202Southampton Rangers 129Bailey’s Bay made a winning start to the new Premier Division season with a convincing 73-run victory over Southampton Rangers at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday.Rangers, who survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last summer, looked to have made a wise decision bowling first with the visitors teetering on 40 for four early in the day.Displaying the type of character that saw them win ten straight league games last season, Bay managed to recover, though, with Coolridge Durham (36), Cal Dill (77) and Ryan Steede (33) steering them to 202 all out from 45.2 overs.By far and away the pick of Rangers’ bowlers was Quinton Sherlock who did the brunt of the damage, taking six wickets for 39 runs off 8.2 overs. While Bay’s total was well within reach for a batting line-up including strokemakers Janeiro Tucker and Dion Stovell, Bay skipper Stephen Outerbridge later admitted he always believed his enviable bowling attack would defend their score.Outerbridge’s confidence proved justified with Rangers’ top order struggling against Bay’s seamers with national team youngster Lateef Trott outlining his potential, removing Quinton Burch (24), Jaloni Albouy (1) and Dion Stovell (5).Kwame Tucker helped steady the visitors’ ship with a measured 27, providing some support for Rangers talisman Janeiro Tucker who bludgeoned his way to 40 not out before running out of partners.Outerbridge, whose team bowled Rangers all out for 129 from 32.5 overs, praised his bowlers’ clinical display and backed Bay to build on their impressive opening day win.“It looks like a convincing victory now but we were struggling at one point on 40 for four,” he said. “Coolridge Durham and Cal Dill helped us reach our total which I always thought was defendable. To be honest, with our bowling attack I’m confident of us defending any total.”The Bermuda vice-captain also hailed his “trump card” Lateef Trott for his encouraging bowling performance.“Lateef is one of our better bowlers when the pressure is on. He bowled very well today he’s our trump card.”
