Stand-in ump calls off game after brawl

Flatts 312Western Stars 122-0The First Division season got off to sorry start yesterday when a stand-in umpire was forced to abandon the game at St. John’s Field between hosts Western Stars and Flatts after a second brawl broke out between the players.Wayne Campbell, who opted to officiate after showing up to represent Stars as a player, decided to remove the stumps and end the contest when matters got out of hand. When no officials turned up for the game, Campbell voluntered to umpire to enable the game to start but when players from both teams constantly voiced their disapproval over his rulings he decided he had taken enough.“It was a shame to see something like this happen at the start of the season,” said Stars scorekeeper Llewellyn Hall. “The brawls in each innings caused the acting umpire to make his decision and pull up the stumps with things getting out of hand a second time.”Flatts had got their season off to a fine start with Kevin Hurdle and Dejon Carey each striking 82 to lead them to a formidable total with Cofield Robinson contributing 29 before they declared at 312 in 48.5 overs. But Stars were in a good position, moving to 122 without loss. Dano Outerbridge posted 54 and Tre Manders 51 before play was abandoned after 22.5 overs.Hall was unable to give any further details of the incidents on the field.Social Club 73Somerset CC 76-0Somerset made short work of Social Club at Somerset where the visitors had only two players in double figures, Pierre Smith scoring 14 and Sekiyh James 13.The home team reached victory quickly with openers Jermaine Warner and Shaquille Jones hammnering the opening attack, Warner striking 35 and Jones 32.The game between PHC and Somerset Bridge scheduled for PHC was posptoned.
