Rangers crush hapless Devonshire

Southampton Rangers 400 for five; Devonshire 82.Cousins Kwame and Janeiro Tucker ripped the heart out of visiting Devonshire as hosts Southampton Rangers recorded their first Premier 50 Over win of the season at Southampton Oval yesterday.Opening bat Kwame blasted seven sixes and 13 boundaries in a whirlwind knock of 122 while player-coach Janeiro struck an unbeaten 65 and claimed five wickets for eight runs to propel Rangers to an emphatic 318 run win. Also weighing in heavily in Rangers’ lopsided win was skipper Dion Stovell who thumped 68 and claimed three for 22 with his off break spin and middle order bat Rohaan Simons who stroked an unbeaten 72.Rangers were awarded the toss after ten-men Devonshire were late taking to the pitch. And despite the visitors picking up two quick wickets to reduce Rangers to 31 for two things would go horribly wrong for Devonshire as the home team’s batsmen loosened their shoulders and feasted heavily on some tame bowling.Opening bat Kwame featured in three partnerships that put the match well beyond Devonshire’s reach. The former national team player added 61 runs for the third-wicket with Curtis Jackson (21), 76 for the fourth -wicket with Stovell and a further 123 runs for the fifth-wicket with Simons.Third-change bowler Tori Henry eventually made the breakthrough after shattering Kwame’s stumps in the 39th over. But Devonshire’s joy was short-lived as Janeiro and Simons added a further 109 runs in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand that kept the visitors chasing leather and the scoreboard ticking over.Spinner Henry was the pick of Devonshire’s bowling with figures of one for 42 off three overs. In reply, Devonshire were skittled out in 21.5 overs.Dean Richards led the visitors run chase with 26 while Henry capped a good all-round display with a knock of 19.Rangers stalwart Janeiro was virtually unplayable with his gentle seam while Stovell also held his end of the bargain as Devonshire’s resistance ended shortly after the first drinks break.St David’s 118; Willow Cuts 123 for sixWillow Cuts issued a stern warning to all who oppose after upstaging defending Premier 50 Over champs St David’s at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.Led by some devastating bowling from teenaged seamer Antonio Darrell, Cuts contained the Islanders batsmen before knocking off the required runs to win by four-wickets with 22.2 overs to spare. The 15-year-old Berkeley Institute student bagged superb figures of four for 18 off 6.3 overs bowling unchanged. The right-arm seamer was introduced into Cuts bowling attack in the tenth over and claimed the prized scalp of Chris Foggo (14) in the first over of his mesmerising spell.Darrell made another big breakthrough in the 16th over when he bowled former national skipper Clay Smith for a seven-ball duck before removing Loren Marshall (13) and Del Hollis (one) with successive deliveries to bring the curtains down on St David’s innings.Opening bowler Malachi Jones took two for nine off seven overs that included three maidens while fourth-change bowler Jermaine Trott bagged two for 20 off four overs.Cuts made a pile of it chasing a low score as they lost six-wickets in the process before Jones (15) and Trott (seven) carried them safely across the line via an unbroken 19 run seven-wicket partnership.Earlier, openers Dexter Basden (20) and Chris Douglas (14) added 50 runs for the first wicket before Cuts lost three wickets in quick succession as St David’s began to sense an improbable win after being skittled out cheaply. However, a 28 run fourth-wicket stand between Ricardo Brangman (26) and skipper Dwight Basden (eight) stopped the rot before Jones and Trott put the Islanders out of their misery.Brangman’s top knock contained three boundaries and two sixes.Last week’s Logic Premier player of the week Sammy Robinson (two for 34) and Rudell Pitcher (two for 17) were the pick of the Islanders bowling. There was no information available on the remaining Premier 50 Over match at Sea Breeze Oval between Eastern Counties rivals Bailey’s Bay and Cleveland County.
