Pitcher back to boster St. David’s
Belco Cup challengers St David’s have been bolstered by the return of star all-rounder OJ Pitcher.Pitcher, who is currently studying abroad, has made himself available for St David’s’ Belco Cup semi-final clash with Willow Cuts at Lords.Islanders coach, Wendell Smith, said Pitcher would add depth to an IsIanders’ batting order that has yet to fire on all cylinders.“OJ is really our stabiliser and the greatest thing he brings is some strength in our batting because that’s an area in our team that is most concerning to me presently,” he said.Pitcher’s medium seam will also come in useful in St David’s bid for Belco Cup supremacy.“OJ is a very good inswinging medium pacer,” Smith said.In the lead-up to this weekend’s cup matches Smith said much of the emphasis would be placed on ironing out the kinks in his team’s batting.“This week we are going to work primarily on our batting because the guys are getting starts but are not going all the way,” he said.“If you get out before you score ten runs I can understand that because you may have gotten a good delivery and weren’t set. But once you have been in for a half-hour or more you should go on and get big scores, and we are not doing that because we are hitting the ball in the air too much.“One of the great things about coaching at St David’s is that we have a wicket every week to train on and that makes a lot of difference. Hopefully that will give our guys some confidence as far as trying to get themselves in good nick.“Our guys have wonderful attitudes this year and have been extremely professional. It’s a real pleasure to coach at St Davids because the guys are real serious about their cricket.”St David’s are fresh off a four-wicket loss to Cuts in a Premier 50-Over affair at Somerset Cricket Club last weekend.Smith admitted the Western Counties champs were the better team on the day.“I give full credit to Willow Cuts because they deserved to win and there’s no excuse,” he added. “They outplayed us and Malachi Jones in particular bowled extremely well.“Malachi bowled accurately and didn’t give up many runs. They also had this youngster Antonio Darrell who was a real surprise. I think he got three of four wickets (four for 18).”Smith is preparing his players for what he anticipates will be a tough battle against Cuts in Saturday’s Belco Cup semi -final.“We have a tough semi-final because we scored 270 against them at Lords last year and they beat us,” he said. “Willow Cuts have a team that’s capable of beating anyone on their day and they showed that on Sunday. If you don’t come to play they will beat you.”Smith believes his team’s hopes for Belco Cup glory hinge largely upon their application with the bat.“I would like to think that if we bat well we will win,” he said. “The key to the game for us is our batting because we have a lot of strength and depth in our bowling.”Sunday’s final at Lords could feature two Eastern Counties teams should St David’s beat Cuts and Bailey’s Bay get past Devonshire in the other semi-final.“That would be fantastic,” Smith said. “That would be wonderful and I’m sure there would be a large crowd at St Davids if we have that match.”
