St.David’s and Bay back new president Douglas

Powerhouses St David’s and Bailey’s Bay have backed the appointment of Steven Douglas as the new Eastern Counties Cricket Association (ECCA) president. The election took place last week at the annual AGM at the Harrington Workmen’s Club, home of Cleveland County, with Douglas receiving votes from Bay, St David’s, Flatts and Cleveland County as he moved into the top spot.Former president Harold Millett stepped down after more than two decades at the helm of the ECCA, choosing not to run again.St David’s long standing feud with the ECCA hierarchy was the low point in Millett’s tenure. The Islanders’ wrangle with the ECCA stemmed from the Association’s decision to hand Bailey’s Bay the 2010 series, for the second successive year, despite St. David’s being scheduled to host the spectacle. There are still issues to be dealt with, including the allocation of revenue from the competition among the association’s members, but St David’s will compete in the Eastern Counties this summer. While those issues aren’t going to be resolved overnight, St David’s president OJ Minors insists his club are happy to work with Douglas, a former Cleveland Counties opening batsman.“We are looking forward to seeing how he will get on and will obviously support him in what he thinks is best for the County,” said Minors. “Change is good, and in the end he was voted in and everyone wants to see the competition succeed.“I think he will succeed as long as he is willing to listen to his committee and he could very well be the person to lead us into the future.“We will certainly try and work with him as a club. Although our issues aren’t resolved at the moment we are willing to work with him for the betterment of the Association.”Bailey’s Bay vice-president Tareek Somner also believes the ECCA can now flourish under new leadership and backed Douglas to lead the Counties in the right direction.“All the teams voted and in the end it was Steven won and we are pleased overall,” said Somner. “We will back him in whatever he thinks should be done, and I personally feel it is a step in the right direction.“He has a lot of new ideas that can be brought to the table and with the right support hopefully things can happen for him.“I am an optimistic about the future, I hope that everyone backs him to do the job and in the end it can be beneficial for everyone as long as all the clubs and members are on board.”This summer’s Eastern Counties gets underway on July 21 at Sea Breeze Oval, where Bailey’s Bay will rest their title on the line against Flatts in the first round. The eventual first round winner will face St David’s in the second round on August 18 to battle for the right to meet Cleveland County in the final round on September 1.
