Cavaliers stumble in bid to take top spot

Defending champions Spring Garden Cavaliers missed the chance to join Forties at the top of the Commercial Cricket League when they were comfortably held to a draw by North Village at Shelly Bay.With five wickets in hand and six balls remaining, Village even had a sniff at pulling off a famous victory. They began the 42nd over needing 15 to win but could manage only seven and had to settle for three points to Cavaliers’ seven, leaving Forties, who had the day off, three points clear at the top.“This was a game that went down to the wire. In the end we felt that we let this one get away,” Village skipper Allen Walker said.Devonshire Stars, meanwhile, fielded a full team for the first time this season but crashed to a heavy defeat against Jamaican Association at Devonshire Recreation Club.It was Cavaliers’ first league action of the season after Stars defaulted last month’s scheduled game and rain washed out their next match against Forties but Ricardo Waldron showed no signs of ring-rustiness, following up his match-winning unbeaten century against Forties in the season-opening Memorial Trophy in early May by anchoring his side’s 191 for six with three fours and two sixes in his knock of 76 at number four. After opener Ricky Hill fell for 20, skipper Dave Greenidge (46), who lost the toss, and Waldron added 75 for the third wicket before Alan Boyce chipped in with 27 at number six.Maurice Steede was Village’s most successful bowler with two for 16 from three overs.Opener Michael Payne, enjoying a rich vein of form, engineered Village’s reply after losing partner Dion Ball, Jr for two, following up his unbeaten 80 the previous week against Stars by topscoring with 77, which included three fours, as he and skipper Walker (40) added 74 for the third wicket.Reggie Benjamin (23 not out) kept his side in the hunt as Village closed on 184 for five.Opening bowler Steve Diamond was the pick of Cavaliers’ attack, claiming three for 53 from 14 overs.Jamaican Association earned their first success of the season by romping to a 10-wicket win over Stars, who crumbled to 87 all out in the 34th over.Only opener Dion Wainwright, who hit a half-century against Village last week, held the Jamaican attack at bay, making 48 before he was ninth out.Neil Anglin, who bagged three for 31 from 10 overs, and Junior Lindo (two for nine from six) did the bulk of the damage while Keniek Wallen took one for 11 from nine.In reply, Lucky Morrison (40 not out) and Presley Millwood (35 not out) knocked off the runs in under 15 overs as Stars slumped to their fourth straight defeat. This weekend Jamaican Association host Caribbean rivals Cavaliers at Shelly Bay while Forties face Village at Garrison Field.Fine Leg Byes are setting the early pace in the Evening Cricket League’s Premier Division after winning their opening four matches.Deloitte are a point clear in the Second Division.
