Adams lashes century in Jamaican victory

Former Cleveland County batsman Aaron Adams followed up his explosive 92 in a Twenty20 match last week by bludgeoning a chanceless century to guide Jamaican Association to an emphatic Commercial Cricket League victory over North Village.Devonshire Stars, who have struggled this season after changing their name back from BC Allrounders, defaulted again, turning up with only three players at Devonshire Rec and handing an easy 10 points to leaders Forties. It was Stars’ second default this term and, technically, the club face expulsion from the league’s already slim five-team line-up.But club spokesman Andre Smith said he was prepared to give it another shot this weekend when Stars are away to defending champions Spring Garden Cavaliers at Shelly Bay. Stars, who have yet to take a point this season, defaulted the first meeting between the clubs in May.“We’’ll try for Sunday coming and see how it goes,” said Smith, who apologised for last Sunday’s default.“There were no excuses no one called to say they weren’t coming.”Adams was in imperious form at Southampton Oval where he smashed eight sixes and 12 fours before he was run out for 114 as nine-man Jamaican Association closed in on their victory target of 195 with 13 overs to spare against Village, who played one short.Adams found an able opening partner in new wicketkeeper Khyri Furbert, who was run out for 33, before Presley Millwood’s unbeaten 28 helped seal victory at 199 for three from 29 overs.Earlier, opener Dion Ball, Jr was also in blistering form, hammering six sixes and a four in his 56, while Reggie Benjamin made 45 and his son Dejon 25 as Village were dismissed for 194 off the final ball of their innings after being sent in.Veteran medium pacer Michael Campbell was the pick of the Jamaican attack with four for 36 off 11 overs, well supported by Ian Coke (two for 26 from eight) and Neil Anglin (two for 44 from nine).“Jamaican Association were very good on the day,” conceded Village skipper Allen Walker.Added Reggie Benjamin: “We should have made another 20 to 30 runs because the pitch was a batting strip. We also did not bowl too well.”With Cavaliers having a bye, Sunday’s victory lifted the Jamaicans into second place and they can join Forties on 40 points if they avenge a one-wicket defeat with an over to spare at Shelly Bay in May by winning this weekend’s second clash at Garrison Field.“We’re really on a roll,” said club spokesman Glenmore Barrett, whose side have already secured a spot in next month’s Twenty20 League Cup final.“There’s no turning back now. We’ve been working hard and we’re going after everybody now,” he added.
