Flatts Victoria Cricket Club have taken their dispute with Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) to arbitration. The Eastern Counties club are upset with the manner in which the BCB handled the disciplinary case involving their player, Kevin Hurdle, and have now asked the Ministry of Sports Alternate Dispute Resolution arbitration panel to make a ruling.“We believe that some of the procedures during the disciplinary hearing were prejudiced and we are trying to get them (ADR) to get a more objective view of the case,” said a Flatts source, who asked not to be named.Flatts appealed unsuccessfully against the one-year ban imposed on Hurdle for his part in a brawl that forced a May 6 First Division match between his club and Western Stars at St John’s Field to be abandoned.Hurdle was found guilty of kicking Western Stars player/coach Andre Manders and showing serious dissent at an umpire’s decision. The star bowler will not be eligible to play again until June 18, 2013.Flatts feel that Hurdle’s punishment is too severe, a claim that the BCB strongly reject.“Any claims that the penalty assessed on Kevin is excessive have absolutely no foundation,” said BCB CEO Neil Speight. “Kevin Hurdle pled guilty to both Code of Conduct breaches at his recent hearing.“The Disciplinary Committee levied the minimum penalty applicable available to them after considering the mitigating circumstances.”There were no official umpires at the abandoned match that was halted in the 23rd over of the hosts’ innings.Tempers flared after Stars batsman Tre Manders stood his ground when he was adjudged to have been run out by stand-in umpire Wayne Campbell who is the president of Western Stars Sports Club.Andre Manders, who was serving as square leg umpire at the time of the incident, later admitted he told his son Tre to remain at the crease after concluding that the ball had reached the boundary. It is then alleged that heated words were exchanged between Tre and Flatts stalwart Rahji Edness which escalated with Tre Manders allegedly threatening to strike Edness with the bat.It is understood that Hurdle eventually stepped in to separate the two men but is alleged to have been shoved by Andre, a claim which the latter denies.Andre Manders was reprimanded for “displaying conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game” while serving as a stand-in umpire and he was temporarily relieved of his duties as head coach of Bermuda’s Under-19 national squad.Tre was reprimanded for using “language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive and insulting.”Edness was banned for two 50-over matches for “using language or gesture(s) that is seriously obscene, seriously offensive or of a seriously insulting nature.”
