Wainwright hails a ‘sport of greatness’
Cricket legend Dennis Wainwright told Hamilton Rotary Club yesterday he believed that “through sports, men achieve greatness” and that cricket was the “greatest character-building game in all sport.”But he admitted the game had changed dramatically since he played Cup Match from 1957 to 1969.“Cricketers were proud of being selected for Cup Match,” told those in attendance.“They were proud to wear their jackets and represent their teams and they were expected to act like a Cup Match player year-round.“When the Somerset team came off that ferry and walked onto the field at St George’s Cricket Club, they looked like gladiators ready for battle. All the younger men on the St George’s team were more than a little intimidated by them.“If you were called out, you respectfully put the bat under your arm and walked off of the field proud. We never saw any cricketer throw down his bat and question the umpire’s decision like they do today.“When I played cricket at Cup Match players played the game for the passion and love of the sport; not for the money. Nowadays, there are millionaires playing cricket, which just didn’t happen back in the day.“I hope and pray that in this Cup Match, we will see Somerset at their best in terms of behaviour, and St George’s at their best in terms of playing well and winning.”
