Brathwaite ton seals title for Cavaliers

Anthony Brathwaite smashed a century as Spring Garden Cavaliers retained their Commercial Cricket League title with two matches to spare.Brathwaite’s unbeaten 104 helped Cavaliers pile up an imposing 271 for four declared and then restrict Jamaican Association to 167 for five, picking up seven points to put the title out of the reach of their rivals.North Village and Forties were left frustrated at Shelly Bay where no play was possible because staging from a Saturday night show had not been cleared away.The clubs, who meet again this weekend at Garrison Field, agreed to share the points.Told Cavaliers had been declared league champions again, wicketkeeper Allan Boyce said: “We can celebrate early then.”Ten-man Cavaliers went on the rampage after being sent in at Garrison Field in a game reduced to 40 overs a side.Brathwaite struck eight sixes and nine fours in his century, hammering 26 in one over from medium pacer Neil Anglin, and added an unbroken 153 for the fifth wicket with Chris Clarke (51 not out), the declaration coming as soon as Brathwaite reached his century and his partner his half-century.Khiry Furbert led the Jamaican reply with 69 as Keniek Wallen chipped in with 27 and Khiry Easton 24, but they gave up the run chase with eight overs remaining and settled for three points.Craig Brangman, who earlier made 64, led the Cavaliers attack with three for 24 from five overs, while Rohan Henry was rewarded for his 15 overs with two for 57.Cavaliers and Jamaican Association meet again at Shelly Bay on Sunday when the clubs will compete for their annual Caribbean Cup.Final league match of the season will be between Cavaliers and Village at Shelly Bay on August 26, followed by the second Twenty20 League Cup semi-final between Village and Forties the following Sunday.Awaiting the winners of that match the final is to be played the same afternoon are Jamaican Association, who beat Cavaliers in June, ending their rivals’ hopes of repeating their unprecedented clean sweep of all four major trophies last season.The knockout will be held on September 9 and 16.
