Lionel Cann is standing by his decision not to play for St. David’s in the second round of the Eastern Counties this weekend.Cann recently confirmed to The Royal Gazette that he would not be available for the match as St. David’s make their eagerly-anticipated return to the competition after a two-year absence.Cann left St. David’s this season to take on a player-coach role with First Division side Warwick after publicly criticising some of his team-mates for smoking marijuana in the dressing room during a league match late last season. However, he says his decision to make himself unavailable has nothing to do with that incident which he insists is in the past. He says he considers it unfair for him to play ahead of players who are performing well for the club team.“They have a lot of options, guys who qualify for County Cup they can use, like Chris Douglas and George O’Brien,” said Cann.Cann told The Royal Gazette last month: “I’m not turning my back on the club, Eastern Counties made me and it hurts me not to be playing. But I have my principles too and I don’t want to take somebody’s spot if they are good enough.”Bailey’s Bay versus St. David’s is considered the top match-up in the Eastern Counties because of the rivalry between the two teams, but St. David’s will find themselves in an unfamiliar role as underdogs going into this weekend’s second round match.Prior to their self-imposed ban because of unresolved issues with the governing body, St. David’s were the champions of the competition.Bay have dominated the matches between the two teams this season, including their last two meetings when they comfortably beat St. David’s in the T20 final last Friday and then stopped the league champions in 50-overs action on Sunday. That defeat effectively ended the St. David’s hopes of retaining their league title. St. David’s fielded just ten players for that match at Sea Breeze Oval, suggesting they will have to look to ‘guest’ players like Douglas and O’Brien of Willow Cuts in order to field a competitive team on Saturday.Club officials are hoping that all-rounder OJ Pitcher will return from school in the US to play, while Stefan Kelly returned to England after Cup Match and isn’t likely to be available.Bay, on the other hand, have considerable depth in their squad, including ‘guest’ players Tre Manders and Glenn Blakeney.Irving Romaine is back from suspension and could also be in contention.Bay held on to draw with Flatts in the first round last month, after the challengers posted an imposing 294 with Regino Smith stroking 145, a Counties best for a Flatts player. Bay replied with 238 for 6 with captain Stephen Outerbridge scoring 94.* Former Bailey’s Bay and Bermuda batsman Charlie Marshall could be named as a replacement for Clay Smith on the Bermuda Cricket Board Selection committee.Smith, now residing in England, recently resigned from that position.BCB president Lloyd Fray said no decision had been made on a replacement but that Marshall’s name could be put forward for consideration."Changes to the Selection/Outreach Committee are approved by the Executive Committee,” said Fray.“Charlie Marshall's appointment has not yet been tabled at an Executive meeting. Charlie has been providing some very positive and useful informal support to the committee over recent weeks and I expect that his name will be put forward at the next Board meeting."
