Bay cruise to comfortable win
Burton Outerbridge claimed four for 62 and captain Stephen Outerbridge and Tré Manders shared in a quickfire fourth-wicket stand of 97 as Bailey's Bay comfortably won the Eastern Counties second round clash by seven wickets at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday.Bay continued their dominance over St. David's this season with their fifth win over the Islanders and third in eight days.Outerbridge, Kyle Hodsoll and Rodney Trott shared eight wickets after Stephen Outerbridge won the toss and sent the challengers in. Then, with the match hanging in the balance with Bay 69 for three, Outerbridge, as he has done so often this season, came to the crease to play a true captain's innings. This time he and Manders removed any thoughts of an upset with an unbeaten stand of 97 in just 62 minutes. Outerbridge just missed out on a century in the first round against Flatts, this time he was left not out on 49 after Manders smashed Delyone Borden for two straight driven sixes to bring up his 50 and seal the win for Bay in exciting fashion. The youngster smashed six sixes and a four in his knock of 54 while Outerbridge's more patient 49 included three sixes and two fours.Borden went for 45 runs in his 6.5 overs as 17 came off that last over. It was a county match that he will quickly want to forget, having become the first casualty of the St. David's innings when he was run out for a two-ball duck in the second over of the match after trying for a risky single.Chris Douglas (34) and captain Fiqre Crockwell (14) carried the score to 46 by the 13th over before Hodsoll struck twice in the space of five runs to remove both batsmen. But more damage was to come in the 23rd and 24th overs when three wickets went down on 65 in just six minutes to leave the challengers reeling at 65 for six.Justin Pitcher skied a catch to Terryn Fray at backward point off Rodney Trott and in the next over Outerbridge claimed OJ Pitcher (15) and Sammy Robinson in successive deliveries to break the back of the St. David's batting.Brothers Loren Marshall and Rudell Pitcher, who rescued St. David's from 54 for five against Bay just a week earlier, came together again for another crucial partnership to give St. David's some hope. This time they added 74 in 51 minutes for the ninth wicket to take the total to 160 and suddenly St. David's were thinking they could make a game of it after all.The stand ended when Pitcher was bowled for 49 after hitting five sixes and two fours off 37 balls before Marshall was last out for 31 from three fours and a six.Outerbridge claimed man-of-the-match honours with his four for 62, all four wickets coming in his second, 12-over spell, while Hodsoll supported with two for 49 off 17 overs and Trott two for eight from three overs. Not even two rain stoppages earlier in the day could change the St. David's fortunes. After the second break the match was reduced to 101 overs, with Bay allowed 52 overs in their run chase. After Cal Dill hooked George O'Brien for six first ball, St. David's struck back next over to remove Dill. They got two more wickets on 31 and 69 before Outerbridge and Manders saw them to victory. They were brought together after Terryn Fray's soft return catch to Del Hollis ended a well-played knock of 35 which included six fours.“We lost the game at 65 for six, 74 for seven and 86 for eight, so we never really got a start,” said St. David's coach Wendell Smith.“Bay have been doing that to us all year, they never really let us get started with our batting and all power to them. They played well and no excuses. There were a couple of guys who quibbled about one particular decision (unsuccessful stumping appeal against Stephen Outerbridge) in the middle of the innings but those things happen in cricket. At the end of the day Bailey's Bay are the Eastern Counties champions and I'm not going to make any excuses.“To be honest we didn't bowl badly, but Stephen Outerbridge applied himself. He comes in and solidifies the innings, he's been doing it all year.“Next year it will be down in St. David's on our wicket and our field. They deserve to be champions, they have outplayed us all year but next year is another year.”
