MVP delay is unprofessional, says Cann

Calls have been made for rivals Somerset and St George’s to announce the Cup Match MVP Award winner sooner.More than a month has passed since Somerset’s lopsided win over St George’s yet this year’s Cup Match MVP Award winner has yet to be announced.According to reliable sources, this year’s award recipient has already been chosen by the managers and coaches of the opposing teams. However, their identity will only be revealed when either champions Somerset or St George’s hold their Cup Match awards ceremonies.Somerset postponed their Cup Match prize ceremony at the weekend due to Tropical Storm Leslie while it remains doubtful St George’s will hold a prize ceremony for their players this year.Somerset crushed St George’s by ten-wickets at Somerset Cricket Club in this year’s mid summer classic to reclaim the coveted showpiece.St George’s skipper Lionel Cann said announcing the Cup Match MVP long after the match has ended is “unprofessional”.“Why should we have to wait weeks or months before the MVP is announced?,” he said. “Nowhere else in the world do they delay naming the MVP for so long which I think is totally unprofessional.“I don’t know why it takes so long to announce the Cup Match MVP because you have the panel (judges) at the match who should know who the MVP is by the end of the game.”Cann said the delay in announcing the Cup Match MVP takes some of the shine from the award.“It definitely takes away from the prestige and people don’t even care or worry about who the MVP is weeks or months later,” he added. “I think the Cup Match MVP should be announced that evening (immediately following the match) and perhaps awarded to that person within a week like they do with the Safe Hands Award.”Former Somerset Cup Match wicketkeeper and opening batsman, Ricky Hill, believes this year’s Cup Match MVP should’ve been announced after Somerset’s victory was sealed.“I think the MVP should have been announced right after the match,” he said. “I can’t see no reason why the MVP wasn’t announced right after the match because you had all of the statistics and a winner.”Hill agrees with Cann that delaying announcing the MVP takes away from the prestigious award.“You can’t wait too long to announce a MVP because it takes away the excitement,” he said. “People want to know who the most valuable player was and I’m sure the person who deserves it would like to know as well.“I would like to see the MVP announced right after the match. Any awards relating to Cup Match should be announced right after the match.”This year saw three Somerset players and two from St George’s stand out among the crowd during Cup Match.Somerset skipper Jekon Edness stroked a polished 67 before retiring with severe cramp in his team’s first innings total of 271 all out. Somerset seamers Janeiro Tucker and Gregg Maybury both shone with the ball, with Tucker claiming six for 28 in St George’s first innings and colt Maybury five for 18 in the East Ender’s second innings.Veteran St George’s batsman Glenn Blakeney thumped a game high 68 in his team’s first innings total of 219 all out while off spinner Delyone Borden claimed four for 78 in Somerset’s first innings respectively.
