Robinson shocked at training squad omission
Jacobi Robinson has expressed disappointment at being excluded from a national cricket team training squad. On Thursday Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) announced a training squad of 45 players for next year’s ICC World Cricket League Division Three Tournament. However, the Somerset player was not included in the national training squad that was released to the media just hours after Robinson had been named Logic First Division Player of the Year.Robinson won the award after leading the First Division wicket haul with 25 dismissals at an average of 10.32. He also played an integral role in Somerset’s successful promotion bid.In response to being overlooked for the national training squad, Robinson said: “I feel that I am still one of the better players on the Island but for them (BCB) to pick a squad of 45 players and I don’t even get invited to a training session is kind of harsh.“Nobody has ever sat down with me and explained why I’m not in the national programme. I don’t know what the criteria is that they (BCB) pick their team from, but when I was in the national programme before it was due to performance and availability and all of that.”The BCB did not immediately respond to questions e-mailed to them requesting an explanation for Robinson’s exclusion.Just hours before the national training squad was announced Robinson declared his willingness to resume playing for Bermuda in an interview with this newspaper.“At any time I would like to play for my country and, going forward, of course I would love to play for my country,” he said. “If selected I’ll be training.”Robinson was last involved with the national team during World Cup qualifiers in South Africa in 2009 when he joined the team as a late replacement for the injured Chris Douglas. But since then his services have seemingly not been required.“I haven’t played in the national team for three years and not once during that period has anybody invited me to a training session,” he said. “I’m not in their plans and I guess I’m just not good enough anymore.”In 2004 the BCB and Robinson were involved in a bitter row after the latter had considered returning early from a BCB-sponsored training stint at the University of Port Elizabeth International Cricket Academy in South Africa. Robinson had contemplated leaving early because of a troublesome back injury and growing costs for treatment paid for out of his own pocket. The player eventually completed his stay at the academy but was later placed on six-months probation by the BCB for making “unauthorised” comments about his ordeal in South Africa to this newspaper without the Board’s permission. When asked is there any bad blood between the BCB and himself, Robinson replied: “I think there have been issues with me and the Board since South Africa and it’s been like a dark cloud over my head since 2004.“I just can’t shake it off and nobody has ever come to me and said ‘Jacobi, this is how we feel or whatever’. It’s always been excuses like he’s not fit or committed.“That was their reason for not picking me in 2009 (World Cup qualifiers) but then someone (Douglas) gets hurt and they called me to come over there and I play before two other guys that were already picked for the team. If I wasn’t fit enough to make the original team then how was I fit enough when somebody gets hurt to come over there and play?”* Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday announced September 23 as the scheduled rain date for tomorrow’s promotion/relegation play-off game between Cleveland and Western Stars at Sea Breeze Oval.Earlier this week the BCB came under fire for cancelling last weekend’s final round of First Division matches that determined the championship and remaining team to contest tomorrow’s promotion/relegation playoff with Premier side Cleveland.
