BCB deny Leverock was dropped from national team
Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) have denied claims that top cricketer Kamau Leverock was dropped from the senior national squad chosen to represent Bermuda at this month’s ICC Americas Division One T20 Championship in Florida.According to various reliable sources Leverock was omitted from the squad because his school grades in the UK were not “up to par”. But according to BCB President Lloyd Fray, that simply wasn’t the case.“Leverock was not dropped for the T20 tournament and neither has been axed from Bermuda's senior squad,” Fray said in a written statement. “The facts are that Leverock withdrew from the squad due to school commitments and has been replaced by Dennico Hollis.“In our experience it is not unusual for young men, balancing schoolwork and cricket commitments, to be unavailable for international cricket duty. In particular the current squad features many younger players that are in secondary or tertiary education.”Fray described The Royal Gazette article published in Friday’s edition as “misleading” and “damaging” to Leverock’s reputation.“On behalf of the Board I would like to express our extreme disappointment in the story written about one of Bermuda's most talented young players, Kamau Leverock,” the statement read. “The article unnecessarily and incorrectly blemishes Leverock's reputation.“This misleading, damaging and distasteful article is completely unfair. I fully expect that The Royal Gazette will correct this injustice in short order."Last week the Board named Leverock in Bermuda’s 14-man squad to compete at the upcoming ICC Americas Division One T20 Championship (ICC World T20 regional qualifier) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida March 18-25.The nephew of former West Indies batsman Alvin Greenidge and Bermuda spinner Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock travelled with the senior national team on a tour of Barbados last month where the tourists played a series of 50 over and T20 matches as preparation for the Americas Division One T20 Championship and ICC Pepsi World Cricket League (WCL) Division Three tournament to be held on local shores April 28 to May 5.Bermuda will be among the five countries that will compete for the two ICC World T20 global qualifying spots up for grabs during this month’s Americas Division One T20 Championships in Florida. The remaining participating countries include Cayman Islands, Suriname, Bahamas and hosts USA.A new Americas Division One T20 champion will be crowned later this month as reigning champs Canada, who have been granted automatic qualification to November’s ICC World T20 global qualifying tournament in Dubai, are not back to defend their title due to conflicting Intercontinental Cup and World Cricket League commitments with Kenya and United Arab Emirates.Bermuda finished third at the previous Americas Division One T20 Championship held in Florida in 2011 to advance to last year’s ICC World T20 global qualifiers in Dubai where David Moore’s men failed to qualify for the finals.Following the Americas Division One T20 Championship Bermuda will play against hosts USA in a series of 50 over matches as further preparation for next month’s ICC Pepsi WCL Division Three tournament.
