Blakeney in fight against illness

Glenn Blakeney

Star cricketer Glenn Blakeney is currently battling with an undisclosed illness, The Royal Gazette has learned. The St George’s batsman was recently hospitalised with what has been described as a “concerning health condition” that may require further treatment overseas if necessary. The veteran cricketer’s father, Glenn Blakeney Sr, acknowledged that his son is presently ill when contacted by this newspaper but declined to reveal the exact nature of the illness.“It’s not something that I'm prepared to speak to in any detail because it’s a very personal and private matter for my son,” the PLP MP said. “I'm not going to make any comment with regard to the particular situation.”Blakeney acknowledged that his son had been hospitalised as a result of his illness which has brought family members together in prayer.“The family has come together to support the challenge that he has and we are holding him up in prayer and expecting that everything will go well,” he said. “Right now we're just huddling and praying and hoping for the best outcome.”The aggressive left handed batsman was a member of St George’s Cup Match team that suffered a ten-wicket thrashing at the hands of rivals Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club last summer. He was recalled to the East Enders team after smashing a blistering 86 in the final trial at Wellington Oval.Bakeney has achieved many milestones during an illustrious career at various clubs. In 2011 he became the first batsman to score a double century in the Eastern Counties playing for Bailey’s Bay against Flatts at Sea Breeze Oval. Blakeney’s whirlwind knock of 218 eclipsed the 183 achieved by former Bay skipper Noel Gibbons also against Flatts and Sea Breeze Oval in the 1980s.Blakeney also scored a triple century in a league match for St David’s against Bay at Lords several years ago.In 2001 he scored his only century (104) to date in Cup Match in a drawn match at Wellington Oval. That knock was overshadowed by Janeiro Tucker’s record breaking innings of 186 that eclipsed the previous best of 173 achieved by St George’s Lloyd James at the same venue in 1962.In 1997 Blakeney, who turned 40 last month, was voted as Cup Match’s most valuable player after scoring 79 in the first innings and 90 in the second. He has also performed admirably for Bermuda on the international stage, thumping an unbeaten 118 off 113 deliveries against Argentina at the 2008 ICC Americas Division One tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. That blistering knock contained 14 fours and two sixes.Blakeney’s last appearance for Bermuda was against Uganda in a ninth place play-off at ICC World Cup qualifiers in South Africa in 2009.As well as playing for local sides Bay, St David’s, Cleveland, St George’s and Social Club, the star batsman also had a playing stint in the UK with Benwall Cricket Club in the mid 1990s. Blakeney was one of two Bermudians in Benwall’s team, the other being Clay Smith.Blakeney and Smith currently share records for the third highest second wicket partnership (140) and second highest stand for the third wicket (144) in Cup Match.
