Jamaican Cricket Association have called upon reinforcements for today’s T20 clash with visiting Melbourne Cricket Club of Jamaica at Somerset Cricket Club.The reigning Commercial League T20 champions have been bolstered with the additions of Lloyd Morrison, Traddie Simpson, Donavan Livingston, Dean Richards and Alex Doars to their ranks.Fast bowler Simpson has previously represented Bermuda on the international stage, Morrison and Livingston are both capable early order bats while Richards and teenager Doars currently ply their trade at Devonshire Recreation Club and Southampton Rangers.At press time Jamaican Cricket Association had yet to name their squad that will lock horns with Melbourne CC in what will be the local club’s first match against a touring side on Bermuda’s shores. However, team manager Glenmore Barrett is confident that the team that is eventually chosen will make a good account of themselves“We plan to make a good account of ourselves against those guys (Melbourne) because we know they are not chicken players,” he said. “We have our original team and a few friends who we have invited in who don’t normally play with our regular squad and overall we look good and the guys are ready to go.”Barrett is quite familiar with Melbourne CC having grown up near the club’s ground in Kingston.“Melbourne CC is a staunch cricket club and with a man like Courtney Walsh onboard you can imagine it has to be saying a lot of things or he wouldn’t be there,” he said. “Over the years they have got respect everywhere in Jamaica.”Barrett’s team will go into today’s T20 clash at a disadvantage having not played a competitive match this year.“It’s going to be a challenge for us because being in the off season we are not fined tuned,” he said. “But the enthusiasm I’ve seen among the players we can expect to field the best team we can.”Barrett said T20 cricket is a format that his team has taken a very good liking to.“We are the current T20 champions so we actually have a feel for the game and pace of it,” he added. “We look forward to the challenge and that will help mould us for the upcoming season.”Today’s match gets underway at 6:30pmTomorrow will see tour hosts Somerset Cricket Club take on the visitors at the same venue (6:30pm).Melbourne CC are also scheduled to play three 50 overs matches with the senior national team on April 13, 14 and 16 at Somerset (11am).The visitors’ 13-man squad arrived in Bermuda last night along with coach Robert Samuels, manager and primary benefactor Courtney Walsh and club President Neville Atkinson.Melbourne CC are without skipper Yannick Elliott who remains hospitalised after suffering a stroke and fellow all-rounder Fabian Allen who has been ruled out through school commitments.Nonetheless, team coach and former West Indies batsman Samuels is confident the tourists will still be able to make a good account of themselves in the pair’s absence.“We will still be playing good, competitive cricket and hopefully give a fantastic account of ourselves,” he said. “We’re still looking to win and ensure that we entertain and show what Melbourne Cricket Club is all about.”
