Early test for Cuts and Rangers

Dion Stovell: Expecting a close match tomorrow between Willow Cuts and Southampton Rangers.

Willow Cuts’ away match to Southampton Rangers could be their first real test in the league for both unbeaten teams as they go head to head tomorrow at Southampton Oval.In a season that has been far from exciting and high on mismatches, it is timely that this weekend brings together the first of what should be a handful of quality fixtures. The winners should not only claim maximum points but gain an psychological advantage for future games. The teams are also scheduled to do battle on July 6 at White Hill Field in the opening round of the Western Counties.Rangers skipper Dion Stovell isn’t buying into the mind games surrounding the match and reckoned it could be close.“For the past few years we have had some good games and this one is no different. When you look at the two teams, we are evenly matched and it comes down to who wants it more on the day.”Rangers have got wins over Flatts and Cleveland in their opening two games, while Cuts brushed aside St George’s and Somerset Bridge for their two victories thus far.Given the form of both clubs, Stovell urged his team-mates to focus on the match and not the pre-match hype.“We have some sort of form but we won’t rest on that because in sports everything can change in a heartbeat. You have to be prepared.“This match can put some distance between the two clubs but we want to focus on the actual game and not all the hype surrounding it.”Elsewhere tomorrow, St George’s and Western Stars will look to bounce back from last week’s losses when they clash at Wellington Oval, while St David’s, also unbeaten, welcome PHC to Lord’s.Flatts travel to Devonshire Rec and Cleveland take their campaign on the road to Somerset Cricket Club. The West Enders are also undefeated this season. The remaining match of the day sees Somerset Bridge take on Warwick at White Hill Field.Bailey’s Bay have a bye this weekend. All matches start at 11am.
