Edness encouraged by Somerset’s promising start

Somerset skipper Jekon Edness

Somerset Cricket Club skipper Jekon Edness is encouraged with his side’s start to the season with the west enders in the thick of the league title race.Edness’ men picked up a morale boosting five-wicket victory over defending champions Bailey’s Bay at Somerset Cricket Club on the opening day of the campaign. They then followed up with a convincing 197-run victory over Flatts on the road before a narrow two-wicket defeat in their recent match against Cleveland County.Although Edness (pictured) admitted the defeat to a potential title contender was a setback, he said he was satisfied with the start Somerset had made.“Our start has been good, we have a few good wins under our belt and we just need to continue playing the games that are in front of us and not look at the names of the teams we are playing,” said Edness.“Our first game was against the champions and you always know that when you play a team of Bailey’s Bay’s quality you have to be ready and prepared to play the whole game, not just bits and pieces.“I always felt that if we played to the best of our ability we would be able to beat them and it was a matter of putting our heads down and applying ourselves.“We had a good day with both bat and ball and it was our day, not theirs and we were happy to start the season with a win.“Sunday we didn’t put our best foot forward against Cleveland, we didn’t bat as well as we have this season. I won the toss and felt we could make runs on a fairly decent wicket and we left too many runs out there.“If you only make 150 runs, you should expect to be battling to even give yourself half a chance for the win so we didn’t do ourselves any favours.“We did make a game out of it but I still felt that although the loss was likely we still could have and should have won the match.”Edness believes the club’s new coach Jeff Richardson has also brought an old school approach to the team, something he reckons is paying dividends.“So far we have done well in both departments of the game, we have the capabilities to beat a lot of teams and if we can get a strong XI every week we can definitely make some noise,” he said. “We have about eight or nine players that can bowl ten quality overs for us, so we just need to remain focused on the task as the games come.“Our new coach Jeff Richardson has also brought in the old school approach to the game and that’s something that’s always a bonus to any side.”Next up for Somerset is a west end derby against Willow Cuts at White Hill Field.
