Bailey and Burgess to be honoured
The legacies of past Somerset Cup Match players Joe Bailey and Terry Burgess will be honoured during next month’s inaugural match for the Bailey/Burgess Cup.The match will be played at Somerset Cricket Club on July 6 between hosts Somerset and Bailey’s Bay and will also serve as a Cup Match and Eastern Counties trial for opposing teams.According to Somerset Cricket Chairman Michael Corday, the match is the brainchild of Somerset Cup Match team-mates Jekon Edness and Stephen Outerbridge.“Stephen Outerbridge from Bailey’s Bay and Jekon, our skipper, spoke about it and we were trying to come up with some ways to have a successful trial and make it a community event as well,” he said. “It’s the brainchild of those two guys and it has the blessing of Somerset Cricket Club.“We are always trying to do community events so if we can make this a community event it will serve a dual purpose because it will be a trial game for the Eastern Counties as well as a Cup Match trial.”Corday said the format for the inaugural match has yet to be decided.“That’s something we’re still working on,” he added.During his heyday Bailey led Somerset to multiple league and cup honours and is the last West End skipper to win Cup Match at Wellington Oval having achieved the feat in 1981. The brother of past Bermuda Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) President Ed Bailey also played and managed Bermuda on the international stage. The late Burgess made a name for himself as a feared fast bowler domestically with Bailey’s Bay, Hamilton Parish and Somerset in Cup Match and also served Bermuda well internationally prior to his death in 2005 at age 46.Bailey said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised by Somerset who are a great club in a great community. I played with some great players and had a lot of help at Somerset and that’s the thing I really appreciate. It’s nice to work with people who have a lot of confidence in you and I was glad I was given that confidence.”Bailey said he was delighted to see the legacy of Burgess honoured as well.“Terry was an excellent cricketer,” he said. “I had the opportunity of playing against him and also the honour of being his assistant manager while he was playing for Bermuda during the ICC Trophy (former World Cup qualifier).”Former Bay, Parish and Somerset Cup Match wicketkeeper/batsman Ricky Hill echoed Bailey’s thoughts.“Terry had a big influence at Bailey’s Bay and Hamilton Parish as well as at Somerset during his Cup Match years and I think it’s a great idea the two (Somerset and Bailey’s Bay) can come together and acknowledge that,” he said. “I think it’s a wonderful idea to have a trial match and honour past players like Terry Burgess and Joe Bailey.”
