Somerset step up Cup Match preparations
By Colin ThompsonCup holders Somerset Cricket Club officially launched their Cup Match preparations this week.The West Enders were originally due to kick start preparations for their title defence at Wellington Oval next month with a Cup Match trial match against Bailey’s Bay for the inaugural Bailey/Burgess Cup honouring the legacies of past Somerset Cup Match players Joe Bailey and Terry Burgess.But according to a Somerset spokesman the match failed to come off after Bay withdrew.Since then Somerset has scheduled three training sessions and as many trial matches to get themselves ready for challengers St George’s who are hosts for this year’s midsummer classic to be held August 2 and 3.Somerset’s trialists were due to train yesterday (July 16) with another training session scheduled for today.Tomorrow the club will stage the first innings of their first Cup Match trial match with the second innings to be played the following day.Another Cup Match trial match will be held on Saturday for the Mackie Simmons/Neville Roberts Cup.Somerset have scheduled a Cup Match training session for next Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of the final Cup Match trial match to be played Saturday, July 27.Somerset’s full Cup Match training/ trial match schedule is as follows:Tuesday July 16Cup Match and League training session (6pm)Wednesday July 17Cup Match Trial first innings (6pm)Thursday July 18Cup Match Trial second innings (6pm)Saturday July 20Cup Match Trial for the Mackie Simmons / Neville Roberts Cup.Tuesday July 23Cup Match training session (6pm)Wednesday July 24Cup Match training session (6pm)Saturday July 27Final Cup Match Trial
