Somerset won’t be satisfied with draw, says Corday

Fans celebrate after Chris Douglas smashed a six to give Somerset victory in last year' Cup Match.

Cup Match champions Somerset will not sit on their bats and play for a draw to retain the cup this year, newly installed club selection committee chairman Michael Corday has suggested.“I think we will do everything in our power to try and win the cup outright,” he said. “We are in a position where we only have to draw to retain the cup, but I’m not sure we have a team that would be satisfied with only retaining the cup.”Wellington Oval has not been happy hunting ground for Somerset who have not won there since Joe Bailey led them to a famous nine-wicket victory in 1981.Corday feels that a Somerset victory in the East End is long overdue and is confident the champions can put an end to the drought this year.“It’s time for change,” he declared. “It’s time to change all those things that have transpired in the past.“It’s time for a different mindset and time to go forward with a new attitude and put those things out of our mind because we feel we have a team capable of keeping this cup for quite a while.”Somerset thrashed St George’s by ten wickets on their home turf last year. Therefore, it’s highly unlikely that the champion’s team will undergo significant changes, if any, this year. But, as Corday pointed out, team selection is never a proven science.“In theory we should have an easy night, but you never know which way the debate is going to go,” he said.Perhaps the biggest changes that will take place at Somerset this year have already been made behind the scenes on the club’s selection committee.Gone are former chairperson Charlotte (Molly) Simons and selectors John Tucker and Francis Richardson.“Molly has done such a fantastic job, but I think she just realised she needed a break,” Corday said. “John and Francis are unavailable because of work commitments.”Corday admitted losing the wealth of experience Tucker and Richardson possess is a major blow.“John and Francis have made a valuable contribution and we are really going to miss them,” he said. “But we also understand their personal life might dictate time-wise what they can afford to do, and we appreciate that.”The trio have been replaced by new selection committee chairman Corday and selectors Jermaine Warner and Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock who is also assisting with the club’s bowlers.“Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock is always around and takes the job very seriously,” Corday said. “We have been very impressed with Sluggo while Jermaine is always around the players and at the games. He has a lot of knowledge about the game.”Somerset skipper Jekon Edness and coach Jeff Richardson make up the remainder of the club’s Cup Match selection committee.Edness and Richardson have been given the task of devising a game plan to help Somerset achieve their Cup Match ambitions this year.“We have put Jeff and Jekon in charge of implementing a plan and we have to give them the tools for the plan they want to implement,” Corday said. “We just need to support those guys and I think we will be fine because we have a squad of players to choose from capable of getting the job done.”
