Record-breaker Janeiro writes Cup Match history

Photo by Glenn TuckerMr Cup Match: Somerset's Janeiro Tucker added to his illustrious career as he became the classic's all-time runscorer with a chanceless, unbeaten 104.

Janeiro Tucker set two new records in the same innings as he became both the first batsman in the history of Cup Match to score four centuries and the leading run scorer, surpassing Charlie Marshall’s previous record of 1357.Cup Match 2013 will be remembered for milestones as Lionel Cann of St George’s became the fifth player to reach 1,000 aggregate runs in the Classic, while teenager Tre Manders scored a century in only his second Cup Match innings with his knock of 109 on the first day as he and Tucker shared in a fourth wicket stand of 181 in taking the score from 110 for three to 291.Tucker achieved the record when he passed 88 runs and minutes later he was celebrating again, this time a fourth century in Cup Match. All his centuries have come at Wellington Oval, including a knock of 90 in 2003.“I go out there to make runs at Somerset, too, but it never seems to happen,” said Tucker when trying to explain his success at the East End ground.“I just decided to go out there and put my head down and bat, which I also do at Somerset but it just doesn’t come off.“Once I got on 35 I looked at the scoreboard and realised the 88 was in reach, so I continued to take the ball on its merit and play as straight as possible. The wicket wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the best. Once I got to the 50-mark just playing straight I knew the 88 was in sight.“Those guys (St George’s bowlers) didn’t bowl in the right areas, they were short, they were full and one or two were hitting the spots and that was when I really had to concentrate. But once they bowled short and wide it was like free hits.”Tucker says he wasn’t setting any targets, “just continuing to play and whatever happens after that happens”. He added: “When I first started I never set a target to achieve what I have achieved so far. I just wanted to play Cup Match.”Marshall, who broke raised the bar on Wendell Smith’s previous record of 1143, was escorted onto the field by two policemen as he came out to congratulate Tucker on his feat which came in 27 innings.“Congratulations to Janeiro for breaking the record, I knew it was only a matter of time, whether it be this year or next year,” said Marshall, the first colt to score a century in Cup Match.“He’s an excellent batsmen and it was a good batting performance from Janeiro. He’s going to go on and score many more runs.”Tucker thanked his parents John and Belinda for always being there during his career and they came onto the field to celebrate his latest achievement. “My mother and father are always there for me whatever I do and it’s nice to have people like that behind me,” said Tucker.John Tucker, who captained Somerset in the early 1980s to a win, loss and draw, never got a century in Cup Match himself (84 not out in 1979 was his highest) but he is 18th in the all-time leading averages with 650 runs at an average of 29.55.“I’m very excited, ‘Nero is the type of player you can expect anything on the day, particularly when he plays down in St George’s,” said John.“Somehow he just performs when he is in St. George’s, this is his field. I saw it coming, I said it before that the best is yet to come and I figure he’s got about four more years. I was talking to Janeiro prior to the game and he felt in the build-up to Cup Match that he was going to make some runs.“To watch him make those strokes through the covers reminds me of myself. I extremely pleased that he’s got the most runs and the most centuries. I’ve seen him make all his centuries, I don’t miss a Cup Match. We’re always there supporting him.”His mom, too, is delightewith Janeiro’s achievements in Cup Match which includes the highest individual score of 186 set in 2001 which beat Lloyd James’ record of 173. “What made me more proud yesterday, and I don’t know if anybody else noticed, was that he stayed there and let Tre get his century first,” said his mother. “I was very happy about that, that he wasn’t selfish. I can’t understand why he doesn’t do anything up Somerset with the bat.“I feel even more happy because John never got a century in his (Cup Match) career.”
