Bermuda target three-way tie

In-form Dion Stovell

Bermuda’s cricket team will move into a three-way tie if they can pull off an upset against Afghanistan in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers in Dubai tomorrow.

The match is the only Group B match scheduled as the six other teams in the group have all played four matches, with Netherlands and Nepal leading the group on six points following victories today.

Bermuda are coming off a two-day rest and will be hoping to have young batsman Tre Manders fit for selection this morning following an arm injury for what will be their biggest match of the tournament so far.

Bermuda will rely heavily on the likes of opener Dion Stovell and veterans David Hemp, Lionel Cann and captain Janeiro Tucker to lead the way in the batting which has plenty of depth. Netherlands took over top spot on net run rate after they comfortably beat Denmark by seven wickets today, scoring 110-3 in just 10.4 overs in reply to Denmark’s 109-8.

Today’s other matches saw Kenya, winless after their first two matches, pick up their second straight victory with a 92-run win over Scotland, while Nepal bounced back from Monday’s defeat to Scotland to beat Papua New Guinea by seven wickets, 140-6 to 141-3, with 10 balls remaining. Kenya, PNG, Bermuda and Afghanistan all have four points in what is becoming a very competitive group.

Afghanistan have been tipped as the group favourites, in fact they were tipped prior to the tournament to go all the way and dethrone Ireland, last year’s tournament winners, as the top team among the Associates.

Much was expected of Scotland, too, but by comparison they have been the disappointments so far, losing to Bermuda in their opening match and then losing twice more to Afghanistan and Kenya, with the latter back in contention after two straight wins.

Scotland have had the benefit of having English County players, while Netherlands are proving to be strong contenders as are Nepal, Bermuda’s opponents this Saturday, who finished seventh in the tournament a year ago.

Nepal won the World Cricket League Division 3 Tournament in Bermuda earlier this year to advance to the 50-over World Cup Qualifier in January. Denmark are the only team of the 16 in the tournament without a win.

In Group A, defending champions Ireland remain the only team with a perfect record, three wins from three, as they share a three-way tie with Hong Kong and United Arab Emirates who have played one game more.

Neighbours Canada and United States have struggled so far and occupy the bottom three places in Group A. US have played one game less and will play that match against Ireland tomorrow.
