St David’s president on county charge
Otis Minors, the St David’s County Cricket Club president, has landed himself in hot water with the Eastern Counties Cricket Association, The Royal Gazette can reveal.
It is alleged that Minors was involved in an altercation with the match officials from last Saturday’s first-round clash at Sea Breeze Oval after Cleveland County had completed a stirring upset fof St David’s, the cup holders.
Yesterday Steven Douglas, the ECCA president, confirmed that Minors has been summoned to appear before his association’s disciplinary committee to face charges.
“He [Minors] is up on charge and is being dealt with,” Douglas said. “It is a charge levied against him, so he will go in front of the disciplinary committee where all the facts will be laid out and from there they will make the judgment call.”
Minors did not return calls yesterday.
Challengers Cleveland put an end to their 33-year Eastern Counties Cup drought in spectacular fashion after thrashing St David’s by 147 runs.
Leading the charge was Jason Anderson, the wicketkeeper, and Dion Stovell, the all rounder, who both scored dashing half-centuries. Dennis Musson Jr, the seam bowler and former captain, also played an integral role in Cleveland’s historic victory over the Islanders, claiming four wickets before St David’s were dismissed well short of their target.
Before the weekend’s stunning events at Sea Breeze Oval Cleveland last won in the Eastern Counties in 1981 when they beat Flatts by three wickets at Lord’s.
That team contained the likes of Allan Douglas and Dennis Musson, whose sons played key roles this time around.
Cleveland will now look to defend the cup against Bailey’s Bay in the second round at Sea Breeze Oval on August 16. Flatts await in the final on August 30 at the same venue.
