Bascome half-century in vain for ICC Americas
Onias Bascome struck a defiant 53 in the tailend as the ICC Americas team suffered a 49-run defeat to host side Guyana in the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under-19 tournament at Bourda Oval yesterday.
Bascome, batting at No 9, was last out in the ICC innings as they scored 180 in 43.5 overs in reply to the 229 for nine posted by Guyana who won the toss.
It was the second straight defeat for the Americas team after their opening defeat to Trinidad on Monday. Guyana recently won the Regional Under-19 three-day championships.
Bascome was one of three Bermudians in the Americas team, along with Alex Dore and all-rounder Delray Rawlins who had a much improved bowling spell from the first match, claiming one for 11 from ten overs with two maidens. His only wicket was that of Bryan Sattaur, the Guyana captain, whom he trapped leg-before wicket for the second wicket to fall after Shimron Hetmyer and Tagenaarine Chanderpaul, a West Indies youth player and the son of Test player Shivnarine Chanderpaul, put on 49 for the first wicket.
Hetmyer scored 21 and Chanderpaul 18 before Kemo Paul, a 16-year-old, and Askay Homraj both scored half-centuries in the middle order. Homraj was top scorer with 69 while Paul contributed 51. Keifer Phill, Arsh Buch and Nikhil Dutta, the captain, all took two wickets to lead the Americas bowling while Bascome had figures of one for 63 from eight overs.
Bascome’s 53 led the Americas batting while captain Dutta contributed 29 and Farham Malik 26 as they came up short in their run chase.
Dore, batting at No 6, was caught behind for 13 while Rawlins, batting at 10, was trapped leg-before wicket for one. In another match yesterday, Barbados beat Windward Island by two wickets in a low-scoring match.
Windwards scored 111 in 39.5 overs and Barbados replied with 112 for eight in 41.3 overs with captain Jonathan Drakes scoring 45 not out after the first three batsmen were all dismissed for ducks as Barbados found themselves in deep trouble with four wickets down and only five runs on the board.
Drakes, batting at No 4, saw the team to victory with his unbeaten knock.
The match between champions Jamaica and Leeward Islands was abandoned after just one ball bowled after heavy rain at the Wales Recreation Ground.
Tomorrow’s third round of matches will see the Americas team play Jamaica, Guyana take on Trinidad & Tobago and Leeward and Windward Islands meeting.
