Paynter puts PHC in a spin

Nzari Paynter picked up five wickets in three overs

Nzari Paynter produced remarkable figures to propel Bermuda Under-17 into this weekend’s Evening Cricket League’s Second Division knockout final.

The slow bowler snapped up five for two from three overs as the youngsters dumped league champions PHC out of the tournament with a 23-run victory in the semi-final at Shelly Bay Field yesterday.

Their opponents in Saturday’s final will be Deloitte, who walloped Blue Fever by 40 runs.

Both semi-finals were 12-overs-a-side affairs, shortened from the usual Twenty20 format because of fading light.

Alex Dore, the captain, who was the top scorer with 48, and Shakeal Outerbridge, who made 32, helped to steer Bermuda Under-17 to 92 for three, with Charles Symons leading the PHC attack with three for 18 from three overs.

In reply, PHC, who began with eight players and finished with ten, were dismissed for 70, Simons, with 21, and Robert Richards, with 20, providing the bulk of the runs.

Outerbridge followed up his useful knock by chipping in with two for 13.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Deloitte piled up 116 for one, with Roedolf van der Westhuizen making 52 not out. He reached his half-century by blasting the last ball of the innings for six.

Fellow opener Lincoln Wahl made 33 in helping Van der Westhuizen to put on 66 for the first wicket before Andrew Brouwer added an unbeaten 20 at No 3.

Guerhardt Lamprecht took two wickets as Blue Fever replied with 76 for four, Jamie Raynor making 26.

Saturday’s final will start at 10am, followed at 2pm by the Premier Division final between league champions Belmont and The Associates.
