Seven-man North Village made light of their numerical disadvantage by thumping Jamaican Association by 47 runs to advance to the Commercial Cricket League’s Twenty20 knockout semi-finals.

Their opponents tomorrow morning will be Young Men’s Social Club, with the winners taking on league champions Spring Garden Cavaliers in the final later in the day.

Unbeaten Cavaliers narrowly made it through their semi-final after chasing down Bailey’s Bay’s 111 with three balls and two wickets to spare.

Mike Payne, who finished unbeaten on 59, and Arun Kikkeri, with 31, provided the perfect platform by putting on 68 for the first wicket for Village, who closed on 127 for three.

Village then restricted Jamaican Association, who played one short, to 80 for nine, with Kevin Lapsley taking three for 17 from three overs and Mike Levon Jr two for 14.

“With [Village having only] seven men, I am sure Jamaican Association fancied themselves as having the edge in chasing down the runs,” Allen Walker, the Village captain, said. “However, we bowled very well. In addition, we took all three catches and topped it off with three run-outs.”

The Commercial Cricket League, which was started more than 40 years ago, took a break last year and resumed this season, initially with eight teams but finishing with only five using just the T20 format.

Barry Richards, the league president, is optimistic that he can strengthen the league next season. “Teams showed this season they still have a taste for Commercial League cricket,” Richards said. “It would be nice to get at least one more team next season.”

While the Commercial Cricket League season draws to a close tomorrow, with Village facing Social Club at 11am and the final set for 3pm, the Evening Cricket League wraps up its T20 season today with two knockout finals on tap.

Deloitte face Bermuda Under-17 in the Second Division final at 10am, followed by the Premier Division final between Belmont, the league champions, and The Associates at 2pm.
