Burgess offered Caribbean contract

Caught the eye: Bermuda wicketkeeper Burgess

Christian Burgess has been offered a training contract with the Caribbean Premier League.

The Bermuda wicketkeeper is believed to be one of six or seven players from the Americas region who will be given the opportunity to earn a playing deal in this season’s CPL, an annual Twenty20 tournament.

The International Cricket Council are expected to make an official announcement regarding the programme in the next couple of days.

Burgess was one of four Bermuda players who travelled to Barbados in December to participate in an ICC Americas camp, alongside players from Canada and the United States.

An impressive performance behind the stumps, and with the bat, where he averaged 56 over four innings, left an impression on Tom Evans, the ICC’s high-performance consultant.

“I’ve been impressed with him [Burgess], with the gloves and with his batting, and just the way he carries himself, he’s a really good kid,” Evans said at the time. “He fits in well and encourages that team dynamic which is sometimes difficult in these combination sides.”

The ICC had initially expected to only pick six players from the squad that was in Barbados, one for each CPL franchise, however, the league expanded to seven teams at the beginning of this week with St Kitts and Nevis entering the competition.

Officials have yet to say if they will extend the training contract offer, which also includes four West Indies Under-19 players per team, to the new franchise.

Burgess should know which team he will train with by Thursday, when the CPL holds its draft, which includes players such as Jacques Kallis, Shahid Afridi, and Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardena.
