Trott not looking beyond Stars clash
Unbeaten St David’s and Bailey’s Bay will look to make it four wins on the trot, while Willow Cuts and Cleveland County will welcome a first victory to kick-start their season in the Logic Premier Division this weekend.
As expected, St David’s and Bay have established themselves as the teams to beat in the 50-overs league after some solid performances so far.
St David’s, who lead the division by two points over Bay, face league champions Rangers at Lord’s, while Bay are at home to Western Stars, who suffered their first loss in the league last weekend at the hands of St David’s.
Rangers, possibly the only team that could break that two-team dominance, have a good record against St David’s at Lord’s, having beaten them on May 1 in the Twenty20 semi-final.
Two weeks later St David’s thrashed them in the Belco Cup semi-final at Somerset Cricket Club after posting the season’s first total of 300.
St David’s will start as favourites but Rangers, with Janeiro Tucker hitting a solid 84 from 69 balls last weekend against Cleveland, are capable of pulling off another victory.
The visiting side will need contributions with the bat from other players such as Kwame Tucker, Andrew Raynor and Jason Wade, who all had solid knocks as Rangers posted 313 for seven against Cleveland last weekend. Left-handers Curtis Jackson and Alex Dore are two other key batsmen at the top of the order.
Dion Stovell and Shannon Rayner, two former Rangers players, have settled in nicely at St David’s and will relish meeting their former team. Allan Douglas Jr is another new signing who has made useful contributions already with both bat and ball.
Rangers have just 17 points from their three matches and need a victory to keep it close near the top of the table. Bay take on third place Western Stars at Sea Breeze Oval as they also put their unbeaten run on the line.
And while the eagerly anticipated match is next weekend when St David’s and Bay meet, the Bay players are not looking any further than the Stars match on Sunday.
“We had a good training session on Tuesday night when Herbie [Bascome] came and did a fielding session with us,” said Rodney Trott, the Bay captain.
“Stars have been playing some really good cricket, that’s our next game so we haven’t even thought about St David’s. We have to make sure we can handle Stars on Sunday.”
Bay were missing Zeko Burgess, the seam bowler, last weekend against Willow Cuts because of a foot injury, and with Lateef Trott now back training it gives them an extra bowling option in time for the St David’s match.
“We have some important games coming up and just want to make sure everybody is fit,” Trott said.
“We’ve got a lot of players so, once a guy gets an injury we can afford to make a switch. Everybody is tuned in and ready, this could be a big year for us and guys know that.”
Either Willow Cuts or Cleveland will get their first win of the season when they meet at Somerset in a bottom-of-the-table clash. It was against Cleveland last season at Wellington Oval that Cuts picked up their season after a slow start.
They will hope this match signals another turnaround for them, as Kavon Fubler, the all-rounder, awaits his punishment after knocking over the stumps and using foul language towards an umpire at Sea Breeze Oval last weekend.
The First Division could develop into a four-team battle for promotion after two wins last weekend by Devonshire Recreation Club lifted them to the top of the standings with a 3-0 record.
Devonshire beat PHC by three wickets and then thrashed Warwick Workmen’s Club by nine wickets and now lead the division by 18 points over St George’s, who suffered their first loss to Somerset Cricket Club.
On Sunday, St George’s meet third-place Flatts at Wellington Oval, while Warwick play bottom team Somerset Bridge in the other match at Southampton Oval.
In the second round of the Central Counties on Saturday, holders Western Stars play Tuff Dogs, the Evening League team, at Devonshire Recreation Club. Tuff Dogs beat North Village by seven wickets in the first round.
