Tucker looks to inspire young Rangers
Janeiro Tucker is putting his coaching qualifications to good use by spearheading a major recruitment drive at Southampton Rangers.
The Premier Division club have rolled out the welcoming mat to players “of all ages”, but have specifically targeted players in the under-14 age category with a view to the future.
“We had under-8 and under-11 teams last year but we are now trying to recruit players for an under-14 team,” said Tucker, who bowed out of Cup Match last summer with a record 1,487 runs and recently became and England and Wales Cricket Board Level 2 coach.
“We want players for all age groups because we are trying to find the next generation of cricketers.
“It’s very important to keep your youth programme going and there are a lot of guys that are interested in playing cricket who I’m willing to help out and offer my knowledge.
“We are taking all ages to see what we end up with and see how we can train them to help the community and Bermuda cricket as a whole.
“Hopefully these guys will come out and learn something and become the next Cup Match stars.”
With his illustrious career drawing to a close, Tucker has discovered a new lease on life in coaching.
“I don’t have too much time left as a player and so I think it’s time to put back into the youth,” the former Bermuda and Somerset Cup Match captain said.
“I just got my level two last November, so I’m trying to give back at youth level and help someone else who is interested in playing cricket.
“Hopefully I can coach the under-14s and I don’t mind helping out with the youth so that Rangers and Bermuda cricket can move forward. That’s what you have to aim for; aim for the youth level to help out with these guys.”
Those interested in joining Rangers can register at the club on Saturday January 21 or January 28 between 1pm and 3pm.
