Crockwell tournament kicks off season

Crockwell was killed last June at the age of just 30

A tournament in memory of late cricketer Fiqre Crockwell will be held at St David’s on Saturday, kicking off the new cricket season.

Crockwell, a former St David’s, Bermuda and St George’s Cup Match wicketkeeper-batsman, was killed last June at the age of 30. It was a murder that shocked the sporting community.

The Fiqre Crockwell Cricket Foundation committee, made up of Raykeisha Burgess, sister Ceblé Crockwell, cousin Serena Crockwell, OJ Minors and Keishae Robinson, has been planning the match since January.

As well as honouring Crockwell, the committee aims to raise awareness of the gun violence that is impacting the island. The six overs a side games will start at 9am, with the final scheduled for 7pm.

A total of eight teams will play ten-a-side matches with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals. There will be entertainment throughout the day, including face painting and fun castle for the children, food vendors and a DJ.

“Before we start will be having a speaker on violence and at the end of the tournament we will be retiring Fiqre’s [St David’s] jersey,” said Robinson, a close friend of Crockwell.

“We’ve been planning this since January, we all had ideas on how we wanted to honour his memory. When we got together we just combined all the ideas.

“His sister wanted to have a jersey retirement ceremony, his cousin wanted to host a happy hour and Raykeisha and myself were always thinking about holding a cricket tournament, so we combined the whole thing. It’s going to be an annual event to kick off the cricket season.

“On the Friday night at St David’s we will have a happy hour from 6 to 9pm when teams can get their jerseys and we will release the schedule. There will also be an under-12 showcase match between St David’s and Bailey’s Bay on Friday evening.”

St David’s will field two teams in the tournament while PHC, St George’s and Bailey’s Bay (Sea Breeze Select) will also field teams. The other teams are Father and Son, a team entered by Crockwell’s father, Eugene. Back Yard Cricketers and Code Red are the other teams competing.

Some of the players who will be participating include Terryn Fray, Rodney Trott, Malachi Jones, Allan Douglas Jr, Dion Stovell, Herbie Bascome, Jacobi Robinson and Neil Paynter, the president of St George’s.

“Everyone is so much on eggshells on the island, we just want it to be a fun-filled event, people to feel safe and to come and enjoy a good day of cricket,” Robinson added.
