A section of Lord’s is to be named in honour of late St David’s County Cricket Club groundsman Sidney “Shot” Carlington, who died this week.

Otis Minors, the St David’s president, said plans are in the works to name the club end of the ground in honour of the long serving cricket groundsman who gave many years of dedicated service to the club.

“Five years ago we honoured Uncle Shot for his long services to the community and the club and I was actually in the middle of trying to get the club side of the field named the Shot Carlington End,” Minors said. “We are still trying to do that and I hoped to have had it done before the first Eastern Counties game but things happened. But we should have it named before the end of the year.”

Minors described the late Carlington as a “passionate groundsman” who took “a lot of pride” in his work and was always keen to pass on his knowledge to others.

“Uncle Shot was a guy who made sure the wicket was ready for the team,” Minors added. “Even for training it was always well prepared for them.

“His pitches were always of a high standard and he took a lot of pride in what he did and passed on some of his knowledge to people like Richard ‘Red’ Carlington and Del Hollis.

“He used to be down there every day getting the pitch prepared and, not only did he work on the pitch, but he also got machines and different things for the club.

“He was a very passionate cricket groundsman. I don’t think he really poked around with the football side of it, so it was always cricket for him, making sure the pitch is ready for the games every week.

“He done a lot for the club and is a big loss to the St David’s community.”

Carlington passed away on Tuesday and was in his 86th year.
