Bermuda’s survival hopes in World Cricket League Division Four remained intact today after their match with Malaysia was washed out a mere three overs from being made official.

Terryn Fray’s side had scraped to 55 for two chasing a target of 229, with explosive openers Kamau Leverock and Okera Bascome back in the pavilion when heavy rains ruled out any further play. The teams will line up again tomorrow at a new venue, Kinrara Oval, the scene of Leverock’s outburst a week ago that has left its stamp on this tour.

The par score for 20 overs using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern calculations was 72. Not only that, but Bermuda were well behind what was needed to improve their net run-rate beyond Malaysia, Jersey and Vanuatu, who created the sensation of the day with a stunning five-wicket defeat of Denmark.

That match at Kinrara Oval whose result leaves Bermuda bottom of the table was the only one completed today, as Uganda and Jersey fell agonisingly two balls short of their match being made official.

Having bowled out Jersey for 126 at spin-friendly Bangi — their target reduced to 105 in 35 overs after a first weather interruption — Uganda were 55 for three in 19.4 overs when a second monsoon-like downpour finished play for the day.

Bermuda and Malaysia were not remotely as fortunate at Royal Selangor Club, never getting a look-in once Fray and Tre Manders were ushered off the pitch with Bermuda seemingly in a hopeless position after a curiously muted start.

Needing to win the match inside 35 overs on the presumption that Uganda had eclipsed the Jersey score in short order, Leverock and Bascome made their slowest start as a partnership in this tournament.

Leverock took eight runs from the first over with two boundaries but the pair then got bogged down until the fourth over when Bascome was trapped leg-before for four from ten balls.

Three overs later, Leverock was caught at the wicket for 11 from 21 balls, leaving Bermuda 18 for two from seven overs and a serious injection of urgency needed.

That was hardly expected to come from Fray and Tre Manders who put on a steady 37 in ten overs before play was stopped. The captain was on 24 from 48 balls and Manders on 15 from 23.

Earlier, Cejay Outerbridge claimed four for 46 from nine overs to restrict the home side to 228 for eight.

Malaysia had been set for something far more significant when they were positioned at 100 for one in the 21st over. But Outerbridge struck with his second wicket, then was backed up by fine bowling from Janeiro Tucker and the reliable Dion Stovell.

Manders, called on to bowl for the first time in this tournament with Jacobi Robinson injured with a fractured hand, chipped in with a wicket.

Robinson’s place went to Chare Smith, making his debut, while Macai Simmons was in for Steven Bremar and Outerbridge replaced Kwasi James.

All statistics, however, were made obsolete by the abandonment. No one in the Bermuda camp should mind.
